One of the influences for the vampire Remmick in Sinners was the Disney Channel Original movie The Luck of the Irish, the director said on a panel with Deadline on November 15. When an attendee identified herself as former Disney Channel scheduler Kimberly Luce and mentioned that she pitched the idea for the 2001 film, Coogler’s response was swift: “God bless you.” According to Coogler, The Luck of the Irish has a lot of fans in Oakland, California. “We used to watch that movie like crazy,” he said. “That was our first introduction to some of the similarities in Irish folk music to, basically, our music. There was a small Irish community in the Bay, and we would talk about it. That movie was kind of a touchpoint for us to jump off of, crazy enough. We’ve been fascinated with that culture in my household.”

Ryan Coogler explains how the Disney Channel original movie ‘The Luck of the Irish’ influenced him while making ‘Sinners’ #DeadlineContenders pic.twitter.com/D8iybJp2In

— Deadline (@DEADLINE) November 15, 2025

Coogler said on the Get Rec’d podcast earlier this year that Remmick’s red eyes and demeanor are inspired by Death from Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. He went on to describe Sinners as a “shout-out to Bram Stoker,” the Irish author of Dracula.
