During an appearance on the Nov. 18 episode of The Drew Barrymore Show<\/a>, the actor joined host Drew Barrymore<\/a>, along with Valerie Bertinelli<\/a> and Ross Matthews<\/a>, at the news desk to discuss a viral PEOPLE story<\/a> about a bride whose relatives all changed their RSVPs to “no” within minutes of each other after she enforced a no-kids policy for her wedding.<\/p>\n Oliver, 49, reacted by sharing what he described as a “relatable” story about his own nuptials. He explained that he and his wife got married in Mexico and opted to have a “very small” wedding.<\/p>\n “I am a pretty private person, and my wife is from the East Coast, and she had all of her high school girlfriends and her college girlfriends who were coming,” he said. “And I said to her, ‘That’s fine, but their husbands \u2014 I don’t want them at my wedding.’ “<\/p>\n Explaining his reasoning, Oliver said, “Because I didn’t want to be introduced to someone at my own wedding when I am sort of a private person.”<\/p>\n “So, she’s like, ‘What?!’ ” he continued, recalling Erinn’s response. “I’m like, ‘Yeah, I don’t know how to do this, but you’re going to have to tell your girlfriends that the husbands can’t come to the wedding.’ “<\/p>\n Matthews, who appeared surprised by the no-husbands rule, interjected, asking, “Really?”<\/p>\n “Yeah, it was a whole thing,” Oliver admitted, before revealing how the women’s husbands handled the situation. “They came to Mexico and had a Mexican vacation, but didn’t come to any of the wedding festivities.”<\/p>\n Barrymore, 50, then wondered, “Did your wife’s friends revolt?”<\/p>\n Charley Gallay\/Getty Erinn and Oliver Hudson<\/p>\n According to Oliver, the women “accepted it because they weren’t going to pass up the trip to Mexico.”<\/p>\n He said his wife’s friends took part in all of the various events over the three-day wedding celebration while the husbands were off “doing their own thing.”<\/p>\n Oliver and Erinn, 52, tied the knot<\/a> on June 9, 2006, in a beachside ceremony officiated by a Buddhist family friend. They were joined by 94 guests, including Oliver’s sister Kate Hudson<\/a>, as well as his mom Goldie Hawn<\/a> and her longtime partner, Kurt Russell<\/a>. Kate’s then-2-year-old son Ryder served as ring bearer.<\/p>\n Axelle\/Bauer-Griffin\/FilmMagic<\/p>\n Erinn and Oliver Hudson<\/p>\n Last year, Oliver spoke exclusively to PEOPLE about his and Erinn’s key marriage rule \u2014 and this one’s not so controversial.<\/p>\n “You never want to go [away from each other for] too long, but if you’re in this business, you’re going to be away,” he told PEOPLE at a Sept. 27 event held by the\u00a0Goldie Hawn Foundation<\/a>\u00a0to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the\u00a0MindUP Gala<\/a>. “I always make it a point to come home anytime that I can.”<\/p>\n “But aside from that, I think it’s just more about individuation,” the Happy Gilmore 2 star continued. “I think there’s a tendency to become codependent, where it’s like, when you’re feeling bad, I’m feeling bad. We are a unit, yes we are, but we are individuals.
