Seattle-based Providence Swedish is planning to cut nearly 300 positions amid financial challenges.<\/p>\n

The layoffs will affect around 296 positions, totaling 3.8% of the workforce, according to a news release from the healthcare provider. They will include non-represented caregivers, union roles, and open positions that will be unfilled.<\/p>\n

Providence Swedish said it is responding to state and federal Medicaid cuts, higher costs from state policies, business and occupation taxes, commercial insurer denials, and fewer medical procedures.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese are tough and complex \u2014 but necessary \u2014 decisions to address the significant economic pressures facing health care today,\u201d Elizabeth Wako, M.D., president and CEO of Swedish Health Services, stated via the release. \u201cWhile layoffs are never our first choice, they are needed to sustain this organization.\u201d<\/p>\n

Providence Swedish also closing pharmacy, clinic<\/p>\n

Along with job cuts, the Credena pharmacy in Cherry Hill will close on November 24, and the Swedish Weight Loss Outpatient Clinic in Issaquah will close on December 12.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese reductions are part of an ongoing evaluation process,\u201d Wako stated. \u201cWe remain focused on our mission and values, making thoughtful decisions to navigate financial pressures responsibly. Our organization\u2019s strength lies in its dedicated people, and together, we will emerge stronger and ready to meet future challenges.\u201d<\/p>\n

Providence Swedish noted these changes are separate from the North Patient Tower construction on First Hill.<\/p>\n
