If pressed to pick the most inter\u00adna\u00adtion\u00adal art fig\u00adure of the past dozen years, one could do much worse than the Swedish artist-mys\u00adtic Hilma af Klint,<\/a> despite her hav\u00ading been dead for more than 80 years now. As evi\u00addenced by the links at the bot\u00adtom of the post, we\u2019ve been fea\u00adtur\u00ading her here on Open Cul\u00adture since 2017, first in the con\u00adtext of whether she counts as the first abstract painter<\/a>. Just a few years before that, prac\u00adti\u00adcal\u00adly no one in the world had ever heard her name, let alone beheld any of her more than 1,200 paint\u00adings and draw\u00adings. In fact, it was only in 2013, with the show Hilma af Klint \u2014 A Pio\u00adneer of Abstrac\u00adtion at Stock\u00adholm\u2019s Mod\u00ader\u00adna Museet, that she first became pub\u00adlicly known.<\/p>\n

From there, her can\u00adon\u00adiza\u00adtion pro\u00adceed\u00aded rapid\u00adly. One uses that word advis\u00aded\u00adly, giv\u00aden af Klin\u00adt\u2019s reli\u00adgios\u00adi\u00adty, whose inten\u00adsi\u00adty, eso\u00adteri\u00adcism, and rig\u00ador con\u00adsti\u00adtute one of the themes of Alice Gre\u00adgo\u00adry\u2019s recent\u00a0New York\u00ader\u00a0piece<\/a> on the artist\u2019s\u00a0work, lega\u00adcy, and\u00a0rel\u00ada\u00adtive\u00adly new\u00adfound pop\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adi\u00adty, all of it col\u00adored by the fact that none of her pieces have ever been for sale.<\/p>\n

The uncan\u00adni\u00adly mod\u00adern, before-its-time aes\u00adthet\u00adic appeal of af Klin\u00adt\u2019s work is one thing; the dearth of wide\u00adspread knowl\u00adedge about the details of her life and thought, which has allowed many of her sud\u00adden\u00adly avid twen\u00adty-first cen\u00adtu\u00adry fans to imag\u00adine her into their pre\u00adferred artis\u00adtic, philo\u00adsoph\u00adi\u00adcal, and social nar\u00adra\u00adtives, is anoth\u00ader. Yet key to the fas\u00adci\u00adna\u00adtion of her images is that, hav\u00ading been born in 1862, she was\u00adn\u2019t a twen\u00adty-first cen\u00adtu\u00adry woman.<\/p>\n

Af Klint bare\u00adly even belonged to the twen\u00adti\u00adeth cen\u00adtu\u00adry, or indeed to any world\u00adly time peri\u00adod at all. The com\u00adplex and seem\u00ading\u00adly con\u00adtra\u00addic\u00adto\u00adry world\u00adview that inspired her art\u00adwork is prac\u00adti\u00adcal\u00adly inac\u00adces\u00adsi\u00adble to us, even if we man\u00adage to get through the 26,000 jour\u00adnal pages she left behind. Gre\u00adgo\u00adry inter\u00adviews one such (and per\u00adhaps the only) ded\u00adi\u00adcat\u00aded indi\u00advid\u00adual, a non\u00adprof\u00adit CEO and af Klint schol\u00adar ded\u00adi\u00adcat\u00aded to explod\u00ading the myths that have so read\u00adi\u00adly accret\u00aded around her. One is that she worked alone: evi\u00addence sug\u00adgests that some paint\u00adings attrib\u00aduted to her may actu\u00adal\u00adly have been exe\u00adcut\u00aded by oth\u00ader mem\u00adbers of her spir\u00adi\u00adtu\u00adal\u00adist cir\u00adcle, The Five. But even if she turns out not to have been a move\u00adment of one after all, her name will no doubt con\u00adtin\u00adue to sell out muse\u00adum exhi\u00adbi\u00adtions for years to come.<\/p>\n
