{"id":143808,"date":"2025-11-20T16:20:09","date_gmt":"2025-11-20T16:20:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/143808\/"},"modified":"2025-11-20T16:20:09","modified_gmt":"2025-11-20T16:20:09","slug":"humpback-whale-stranded-on-the-oregon-coast-has-been-euthanized","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/143808\/","title":{"rendered":"Humpback whale stranded on the Oregon Coast has been euthanized"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"SOBMP7OOCRFRVJBML3VDLLVKRU\">UPDATE: The whale was euthanized around 3:00 p.m. Monday<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"YFNWHFZA6RHYLNYXHYGHVFKDDI\">A young humpback whale stranded on the shore near Yachats, which captured the attention of many in Oregon and across the world, will be euthanized.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"B6Q55QX32FBSTFVAOAWXCQRPFM\">The process to put the whale to sleep was expected to begin on Monday afternoon, according to Jim Rice, program manager of the Oregon Marine Mammal Stranding Network.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"BY67JZA4BRCXREEJKPZUYUOELM\">\u201cThe first step is to sedate the whale so it\u2019s unconscious,\u201d Rice said. \u201cThe second step involves inserting a large needle into the heart of the whale.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"7ROTO2SO4BASFMRTNYI5CNS3LI\">That needle is several feet long, Rice said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"OH7B3PDMQFBQFDFND5WDB45LR4\">Since the whale\u2019s remains will likely either be left or buried at the beach, officials will use a substance that won\u2019t introduce toxins into the environment, he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"IQX2LVL7FZA4JMOWPAHUKU7324\">\u201cIt\u2019s a very sad, tragic situation,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.opb.org\/article\/2025\/11\/16\/humpback-whale-stranded-oregon-coast\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.opb.org\/article\/2025\/11\/16\/humpback-whale-stranded-oregon-coast\/\">Lisa Ballance from the Marine Mammal Institute at Oregon State University told OPB Monday. <\/a>\u201cThere\u2019s no way to spin this positively. I know the general public is heartbroken.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"XA7YSCQ36BAEBMJXZPIRM3UBTQ\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/pacific-northwest-news\/2025\/11\/thousands-watch-humpback-whale-stranded-at-oregon-coast-hoping-she-is-saved-as-tide-comes-in.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/pacific-northwest-news\/2025\/11\/thousands-watch-humpback-whale-stranded-at-oregon-coast-hoping-she-is-saved-as-tide-comes-in.html\">Over 5,000 people watched the tide come in<\/a> live on Facebook Monday morning, hoping the waves would send the whale back out to sea.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"DOWD5RWBQJELNLV7IHAXOC37P4\">The whale, a 3-year-old or younger male that is roughly 30 feet long and weighs tens of thousands of pounds, had been stranded on the beach since Saturday, after officials believe he was caught up in crab\u2011fishing equipment and lost his ability to navigate.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"image-gallery-image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/6VBBZQRNVZGJNHRKGVQ6AZW4UI.JPG\"  loading=\"lazy\"\/><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"image-gallery-image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/XNVENJ5TKJDJNPOL6ZRIVJHZLE.JPG\"  loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>1\/17<\/p>\n<p class=\"image-gallery-caption\">Live humpback whale stranded on Yachats beachMark Graves<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"VYTOIOVPIRFO3G2UQ67GNQ7LAQ\">Carrie Newell, founder of Whale Research EcoExcursions, got to the scene on Sunday and said officials used a harness and pullies to attempt reposition the whale so is could more easily escape at high tide, but the whale couldn\u2019t stay on the harness. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"PR3VEBDCKFFMPE4OOKAJKUK3FM\">On Sunday night, the whale was given fluids and vitamins.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"5GQEHM2SY5DLBAVJ5K2ZKRSHFQ\">While Newell recognizes people want to push or pull the whale to safety, it isn\u2019t that easy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"NI25DHXIWVDXHKR2HCHPASKSVU\">\u201cYou can\u2019t pull it by its tail,\u201d Newell said. \u201cYou\u2019re going to rip its tail.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"N5AYYHXJAZHWNMBRCBQWX3JMMY\">On Monday, Newell said, authorities had hoped high tide would help the whale swim to safety, but that outcome was \u201cdoubtful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"DZZJ5ISQ75EGZAD3NWWJIDSQSQ\">Humpback whales off the Oregon coast this time of year are moving south and snacking along the way. After spending spring and summer feeding in the cold, food-rich waters off Oregon, Washington and California, they mostly migrate in late fall to warm winter breeding areas off Mexico and Central America, where they mate and give birth. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"Z2KKQX3OVBGRZMDDR43ZXWLNPE\">Because of their long migration and feeding habits, humpback whales are the species most likely to get tangled in fishing and crab gear, according to data collected by NOAA Fisheries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"KS37WNWVSZC7TCOPBGNNWT6OS4\">Live strandings of large whales on the Oregon Coast are rare. In September 2020, a<a href=\"https:\/\/komonews.com\/news\/local\/beached-sei-whale-dies-on-southern-oregon-coast-near-bandon-09-06-2020\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"> 38-foot sei whale came ashore<\/a> south of Bandon alive but died later that night.
