{"id":145494,"date":"2025-11-21T14:45:07","date_gmt":"2025-11-21T14:45:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/145494\/"},"modified":"2025-11-21T14:45:07","modified_gmt":"2025-11-21T14:45:07","slug":"three-metre-giant-oarfish-palace-messenger-of-doom-washes-up-on-tasmanian-beach-environment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/145494\/","title":{"rendered":"Three-metre giant oarfish, \u2018palace messenger\u2019 of doom, washes up on Tasmanian beach | Environment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">It was a beautiful warm day in north-west <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/tasmania\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tasmania<\/a> when a fish with a reputation as a harbinger of doom washed ashore.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Tony Cheesman, who lives in the seaside town of Penguin, was walking his two dogs, Ronan and Custard, along the beach at Preservation Bay on Friday morning when something silvery and surrounded by gulls grabbed his attention.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWhen I got to it, I saw this massive fish, then I noticed the beautiful colours, and it had these long fans coming out of its chin and the top of its head,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019d never seen anything like it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/email-newsletters?CMP=copyembed&amp;CMP=emailbutton\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sign up: AU Breaking News email<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Prof Culum Brown, an expert in fish at Macquarie University, said there were several species of oarfish, but the three-metre specimen found at Penguin was probably the largest and most well-known \u2013 the giant oarfish.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThey\u2019re a very unusual looking fish,\u201d he said. \u201cThey\u2019re super long and skinny, kind of like a ribbon, and they have a continuous dorsal fin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One Australian newspaper even reported the discovery of \u2018a supposed sea serpent\u2019 at Penguin, Tasmania in 1878, with an engraving that looked very much like an oarfish. Photograph: Tony Cheesman<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Giant oarfish could grow up to eight or nine metres, he said, but because they lived 200 to 1,500 metres below the surface, they were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2025\/jun\/03\/oarfish-washes-up-tasmania-west-coast-doomsday-fish\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">rarely seen<\/a>. \u201cThey only ever show up at the surface when they\u2019re sick or dying,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In Japanese folklore, oarfish were known as ry\u016bg\u016b-no-tsukai, which translated to \u201cthe sea god\u2019s palace messenger\u201d, Brown said, and their arrival was thought to herald calamity, such as an earthquake or a tsunami.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">But they were an unreliable harbinger of doom, according to one <a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.geoscienceworld.org\/ssa\/bssa\/article-abstract\/109\/4\/1556\/571628\/Is-Japanese-Folklore-Concerning-Deep-Sea-Fish\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">study<\/a>, which found no link between sightings of these slender sea creatures and imminent disaster.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cOarfish just rock up at random,\u201d Brown said. \u201cWe don\u2019t know very much about them.
