\n\tTwo-time Grammy nominee Madison Beer<\/a> is offering a closer look at the making of \u201cbittersweet<\/a>,\u201d the emotional new single from her upcoming third studio album \u201cLocket,\u201d set to be released January 16. The track follows her first single from the project, \u201cYes Baby,\u201d and marks her return to music after her album \u201cSilence Between Songs,\u201d released in September 2023. Beer said \u201cbittersweet\u201d emerged from a moment she felt compelled to document, calling it a turning point in the deeply personal world she explores throughout the new album.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn an interview for Variety\u2019s Behind the Song<\/a> presented by TikTok, Beer reveals that her fans played a meaningful role in shaping the sound of her new work. \u201cI am very close with my fans and their opinions definitely mean a lot to me,\u201d she said. Touring, she added, gives her immediate feedback about which moments resonate most. \u201cI can see what people are reacting to; the moments of the show they post the most,\u201d she said. Her fans also inspired her to bring back ad-libs, something she used heavily early in her career but later moved away from. \u201cMy fans are always like, \u2018Girl, you do so much fun stuff on stage \u2014 do it in your songs,\u2019\u201d she said. Their encouragement led her to include subtle ad-libs in \u201cbittersweet,\u201d helping her reconnect with a part of her artistry she once loved: \u201cI fell in love with doing ad-libs again because of this song.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe song itself began when Beer felt compelled to process a difficult emotional experience through music. \u201cI was going through something very emotional and real and I was like, \u2018I need to write about this. It feels insane not to,\u2019\u201d she said. Though the track centers on heartbreak, she said it reflects a larger personal evolution. \u201cI can be bitter over things, but I\u2019m choosing to be bittersweet,\u201d she chuckles.<\/p>\n

\n\tBeer\u2019s longtime collaboration with music producer Tim Sommers \u2014 known professionally as One Love \u2014 played a key role in shaping the track. The two have worked together since 2016, a partnership Beer believes has helped fuel her artistic growth. \u201cWe have a language,\u201d she explained. \u201cI can say, \u2018Make that weirder,\u2019 which isn\u2019t a technical thing to say, and he knows exactly what I mean.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tTogether, they leaned into unusual textures and nostalgic tones throughout the track, including synth moments that reminded Beer of early-2000s video game, \u201cSuper Mario Galaxy.\u201d She noted her enduring affection for \u201canything that\u2019s distorted and kind of weird sounding.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tIn the bridge, the song shifts into a more confrontational tone. \u201cThere has to be a moment where you\u2019re like, \u2018No, you did me dirty,\u2019\u201d she said. She incorporated that emotional shift into the song before returning to a final note of acceptance. \u201cAt the end of the day, you\u2019ll know I tried my best with you,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\n\tBeer also spoke about the growing attention around the \u201cbittersweet\u201d music video \u2014 which has surpassed 8.9 million views on YouTube \u2014 featuring Sean Kaufman, who portrays Steven Conklin in the hit series \u201cThe Summer I Turned Pretty.\u201d She admitted she hadn\u2019t seen the show before casting him. \u201cI am totally a fraud and I have never seen \u2018The Summer I Turned Pretty,\u2019\u201d she confessed, adding that her unfamiliarity ultimately made their collaboration easier. \u201cIf I\u2019m a fan of yours, I can\u2019t even look you in the eye,\u201d she admitted. \u201cWe just became friends instantly.\u201d Beer joked that now that he has appeared in her video, she plans to watch the series and is \u201cteam Steven, of course.\u201d<\/p>\n
