Greg Vaughan, research scientist with the U.S. Geological Survey, and Steve Ruff,\u00a0associate research professor in the School of Earth and Space Exploration at Arizona State University.<\/p>\n<p>Today, Mars is a cold and dry planet with a very thin, low-pressure atmosphere.\u00a0 It has water, but it&#8217;s all frozen, locked up in underground ice (like permafrost) and in polar ice caps.\u00a0 But billions of years ago Mars had a thicker atmosphere and a warmer and wetter climate. \u00a0It also used to have active volcanoes. \u00a0So, with all that heat, and all that water, is it possible that there were once hot springs on Mars?\u00a0 And how could we find out?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mars has been a fascination for centuries, with early telescopic observations and fantastically speculative (and as it turns out, fictional) stories about possible canals and intelligent life forms.\u00a0 Modern Mars exploration began in the 1960s with spacecraft flybys, then in the following decades with orbiters, landers, and finally robotic rovers.\u00a0 There are currently seven active spacecraft orbiting Mars and two robotic \u201cgeologists\u201d roving the surface, named Curiosity and Perseverance.<\/p>\n<p>    Silica sinter (an amorphous form of silicon dioxide) forms from the waters that flow from hot springs near Shoshone Lake, Yellowstone National Park. USGS photograph by Jake Lowenstern.<\/p>\n<p>With all the images and data collected by these satellites and robotic explorers, we now have a good idea of what Mars is like on the surface.\u00a0 There is no evidence for canals or complex lifeforms, but there is plenty of evidence for active surface processes, like wind, dust devils, migrating sand dunes, and landslides.\u00a0 There is also evidence for past volcanism, such as large volcanoes and lava flows, and evidence for past flowing liquid water, such as river channels and delta deposits.\u00a0 The evidence for past liquid water also includes a variety of hydrated minerals, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usgs.gov\/news\/alterations-go-hydrothermal-alteration-yellowstone\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">hydrothermal alteration minerals<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usgs.gov\/observatories\/yvo\/news\/hot-and-cold-journey-silica-begins-yellowstones-rhyolite-and-ends-geyser\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">silica deposits<\/a>.\u00a0 It\u2019s the silica deposits, discovered in 2007 by the Mars Exploration Rover, Spirit, that make you sit up and say, \u201cWow! Like in Yellowstone?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Most of the silica deposits in Yellowstone are made of a white, lightweight, porous rock composed of opaline silica.\u00a0 The silica is dissolved from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usgs.gov\/observatories\/yvo\/news\/how-cook-yellowstone-rhyolite-one-part-mantle-one-part-crust\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">rhyolitic volcanic rocks<\/a> below and picked up by the hydrothermal fluids circulating underground.\u00a0 When the hot, silica-rich fluids reach the surface, they cool down and precipitate layered silica deposits and mounds, called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usgs.gov\/observatories\/yvo\/news\/why-do-most-geyser-and-sinter-producing-hot-springs-have-alkaline-basic-ph\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sinter<\/a>, around geysers and hot springs.\u00a0 There is also another way to get silica-rich deposits: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usgs.gov\/observatories\/yvo\/news\/where-do-acid-sulfate-hot-springs-come-and-why-are-they-important\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">acid-sulfate<\/a> leaching.\u00a0 This is where sulfuric acid from volcanic gases reacts with the surrounding silicate rocks near the surface, leaching (removing) metal compounds, like iron and magnesium, and leaving a residue of opaline silica.<\/p>\n<p>On Mars, silica deposits were found adjacent to a site dubbed Home Plate, within a large impact crater called Gusev crater, and there is evidence they formed from hydrothermal fluids.\u00a0 A key observation is the association of the silica deposits with volcanic activity.\u00a0 The Home Plate feature represents the remains of volcanic ash deposits, which, along with nearby basaltic rocks, demonstrates that this place had magmatic activity capable of generating a hydrothermal system, although much smaller than the one that drives Yellowstone\u2019s hot springs and fumaroles.<\/p>\n<p>Because sinter deposits on Earth often host microbial life, they are a key target in the search for evidence of ancient microbial life on Mars. \u00a0Excitingly, the silica deposits discovered by Spirit display tiny fingerlike structures that resemble features of Yellowstone sinter and other sinter deposits on Earth that are referred to as stromatolites, which form by a combination of biology and geology.\u00a0The colorful microbial communities that inhabit the edges and outflow channels of hot springs contribute to the growth of stromatolites along with the silica that precipitates from the water.\u00a0The fingerlike structures observed by Spirit are made of silica, but they have not been shown to include organic matter and may not be equivalent to hot spring stromatolites on Earth.\u00a0 At this point, they are assumed to have formed from geologic processes alone.<\/p>\n<p>    Hydrothermal deposits on Mars. (A) This image was acquired by the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter&#8217;s High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment camera on November 22, 2006.\u00a0 It shows a bright plateau of layered rocks about 90 meters (98 yards) across called, \u201cHome Plate.\u201d\u00a0 NASA image: PSP_001513_1655_red; Image Credit: NASA\/JPL-Caltech\/Univ. of Arizona. \u00a0\u201cx\u201d marks the locations of the rover images in B and C.\u00a0 (B) This approximately true-color image was acquired by the panchromatic camera on NASA&#8217;s Mars Exploration Rover, Spirit, on May 6, 2007.\u00a0 It shows a patch of bright, silica-rich soil that was exposed when Spirit drove over it. \u00a0The track of disturbed soil is about 20 centimeters (8 inches) wide.\u00a0 NASA Image: PIA09491; Image Credit: NASA\/JPL\/Cornell.\u00a0(C) This approximately true-color image was acquired by the panchromatic camera on NASA&#8217;s Mars Exploration Rover, Spirit, on March 13, 2006.\u00a0 It is about 1 meter across at the base.\u00a0 It shows the nodular morphology of opaline silica outcrops adjacent to Home Plate.\u00a0Image modified from Ruff et al., 2020 (<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1089\/ast.2019.2044\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1089\/ast.2019.2044<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Still, understanding microorganisms that inhabit Yellowstone\u2019s hot springs, and the evidence they leave behind, could help answer some fundamental questions in the field of astrobiology: is there, or has there ever been, life elsewhere in the solar system?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Going beyond Mars, there is also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usgs.gov\/observatories\/yvo\/news\/geysers-earth-and-space-how-astrobiology-studies-yellowstone-might-teach-us\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">evidence of geyser activity on some of the icy moons in the outer solar system<\/a>, such as Neptune\u2019s moon, Triton, and Saturn\u2019s moon, Enceladus.\u00a0 Jupiter\u2019s moon, Europa is another outer solar system body that has a liquid water ocean underneath its crust of water ice and may host geysers that are spurting out samples of this water.\u00a0 In October 2024, NASA launched the Europa Clipper mission to investigate.\u00a0 It will arrive in 2030.\u00a0 Stay tuned.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Yellowstone is not just a natural laboratory for Earth science studies.\u00a0 With its history of caldera-forming volcanism, geothermal activity, geysers, hydrothermal mineral deposits, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usgs.gov\/observatories\/yvo\/news\/some-it-hot-studying-thermophiles-yellowstone-national-park\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">thermophilic bacteria<\/a>, it is also an excellent laboratory for exciting planetary science research.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For more about hot spring deposits on Mars, see the following publication: Ruff, S.W., Campbell, K.A., Van Kranendonk, M.J., Rice, M.S. and Farmer, J.D., 2020.
