ROCHESTER, N.Y. \u2014 Palar Banks, a sixth grader at the Aquinas Institute, is being honored for getting a fellow student help during a mental health crisis.<\/p>\n
Palar\u2019s classmate said they would hurt themselves, so she told a trusted adult so the student could get help. Palar\u2019s teacher said her actions show how mature and caring she is. Palar spoke with us about what it means to do the right thing.<\/p>\n
\u201cI felt that it was important for me to tell the teacher because I didn\u2019t want it to go any farther than it needed to go,\u201d she said. \u201cI think that doing the right thing is better than doing the wrong thing because doing the wrong thing, you might not get anywhere else better in life. And it\u2019s better to speak up than not to say anything.\u201d<\/p>\n
Any student in grades K-12 in a Monroe County school is eligible for a nomination. The good deed must have occurred within one year of the nomination. Anyone over 18 years of age can submit a nomination form, including family, friends, school staff, and coaches.<\/p>\n
