What an excellent day for a casting announcement. Scarlett Johansson<\/a> will be starring in the new\u00a0Exorcist<\/a>\u00a0movie from writer-director Mike Flanagan<\/a> with Blumhouse Productions, and Atomic Monster, per\u00a0Deadline<\/a>. Let there be green light! \u201cScarlett is a brilliant actress whose captivating performances always feel grounded and real, from genre films to summer blockbusters, and I couldn\u2019t be happier to have her join this\u00a0Exorcist\u00a0film,\u201d Flanagan shared with the outlet. It will be Johansson\u2019s third horror film, with her first two being 2013\u2019s\u00a0Under the Skin<\/a>\u00a0and 2002\u2019s\u00a0Eight Legged Freaks,\u00a0if you don\u2019t count dinosaurs coming back to life as a horror movie. While it\u2019s unclear what her exact role will be, if it\u2019s anything like the previous Exorcist movies, she\u2019ll be helping get rid of a demon that\u2019s taken over the body of a child or a priest. Or maybe they\u2019ll switch it up, and she\u2019ll be the one possessed. God only knows.<\/p>\n Originally slated for next March, there\u2019s no current release date for this reboot<\/a> of the franchise; it is not a sequel to the Believer<\/a> film from 2023. Flanagan, who has been attached to the project since May 2024 with Red Room Pictures, confirmed on Tumblr<\/a> on June 2, 2025, that they hadn\u2019t begun production and that they had to finish Carrie before working on The Exorcist. He does promise that it\u2019s not a literal remake and that he\u2019s setting high goals for himself. \u201cMy goal is to make the scariest movie I\u2019ve ever made, and trying to make something that scares the shit out of me,\u201d he shared in 2024 at New York Comic Con<\/a>.
