\n\tAt afternoon tea with Kate Winslet<\/a> and Andrea Riseborough<\/a>, it\u2019s a case of waiting your turn.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe beloved British actresses were in central London Tuesday for a screening and informal discussion about their upcoming Netflix<\/a> film Goodbye June. Winslet\u2019s directorial debut \u2014\u00a0anchored by a gut-wrenching script from her 21-year-old son, Joe Anders \u2014\u00a0is a Christmas film with just as much joy as it has heartache.<\/p>\n

\n\tHelen Mirren<\/a> stars as the titular character who, upon receiving a terminal cancer diagnosis, has her swarm of four children (played by Winslet, Riseborough, Toni Collette<\/a> and Johnny Flynn) and their families descend on her hospital room ahead of Christmas Day. Winslet\u2019s Julia and Riseborough\u2019s Molly are forced to confront their long-running feud while everyone tussles with their bubbling grief. Timothy Spall, Stephen Merchant and Fisayo Akinade also star in the movie, in theaters Dec. 12 and hitting Netflix Dec. 24.<\/p>\n

\n\tWinslet and Anders spoke in depth with The Hollywood Reporter<\/a> this week about just how the Oscar-winning actress brought her son\u2019s script to the screen.<\/p>\n

\n\tAnd over a cup of tea and a macaron at a Netflix-hosted event, the Titanic star further detailed bringing a brilliant batch of actors together. \u201cThey are great people. I had to cast people who not only were going to be the only people who could play those parts, but who were going to be lovely,\u201d Winslet says. \u201cI knew they all were \u2014\u00a0even if I didn\u2019t know them personally, I knew their reputations, because word gets around if someone\u2019s tricky.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe original plan had been to take the film out to financiers and get another director on board, but Winslet didn\u2019t want to let Goodbye June go. The magic she and Anders were able to conjure on set was more than enough validation. \u201cHe really found it fascinating,\u201d she says about Anders seeing his project come to life through his mother.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWe shot it in 35 days, and I had Helen Mirren for 16 days,\u201d she continues. \u201cSo I had to be really ready. All those adult actors, all those children, the whole group, loads of different locations, I had to be really, really ready. So for [Anders], there were moments when he turned to me and [would] go, \u2018What\u2019s happening? How have we done all this?\u2019 I\u2019m like, \u2018I don\u2019t know! Let\u2019s keep going!\u2019 We just had to hold hands and run at it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tSome stellar performances from the film\u2019s child actors strengthen an already solid cast. \u201cThe trick with children is you just mother them,\u201d Winslet explains about working with the kids. \u201cI used all of my own experience as a mother in empowering children, showing them how to have fun by saying to them, \u2018Don\u2019t learn any lines and make lots of mistakes. OK?’\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWhat you don\u2019t want is a child memorizing an abstract bit of dialogue, Winslet says. \u201cWe didn\u2019t want that, because children bring the joy. And when you\u2019re in a situation where there\u2019s tragedy happening \u2026 they just get on with what they\u2019re doing with the coloring or playing or hiding in the bed.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt was so funny,\u201d she recalls, \u201cbecause I would carry the little ones on to set. They always felt like, \u2018Oh, where\u2019s Kate taking us?\u2019 I said to them: \u2018Do you know, that in that bed, I\u2019ve actually hidden something\u2026\u2019 So then they\u2019re looking for the hidden thing under the sheets [with] no idea that we were filming an entire scene around them and quite complicated emotions.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThose in attendance at the Netflix event were desperate to get the chance to talk with a prolific actress who has masterfully executed her long-awaited turn in the director\u2019s chair. But Winslet is also just a mother gushing with pride. \u201cHe has brilliant ideas. He\u2019s very, very smart,\u201d she says about Anders. \u201cFor as long as I can remember, he\u2019s always written\u2026 He\u2019s very humble and very shy.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI just wanted him to learn,\u201d she continues. \u201cAnd I wanted him to be around all these incredible actors.\u201d<\/p>\n
