{"id":15710,"date":"2025-09-14T12:28:08","date_gmt":"2025-09-14T12:28:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/15710\/"},"modified":"2025-09-14T12:28:08","modified_gmt":"2025-09-14T12:28:08","slug":"floating-pinecone-shaped-huts-provide-shelter-for-ducks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/15710\/","title":{"rendered":"Floating pinecone-shaped huts provide shelter for ducks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Designer Cheng-Tsung Feng has created four <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/floating-architecture\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">floating<\/a> wooden <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/shelters\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">shelters<\/a> for ducks in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/taiwan\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Taiwan<\/a> to provide protection from extreme weather conditions.<\/p>\n<p>Titled Nesting Plan VI Call Duck, the project is the latest iteration of the designer&#8217;s ongoing Nesting Plan series, which explores the relationship between architecture and the natural world through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/animals\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">animal<\/a> nest-building techniques.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2246023\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/nesting-plan-call-duck-cheng-tsung-feng-taiwan-animal-design-architecture_dezeen_2364_col_9-852x479..jpeg\" alt=\"Two ducks using floating wooden shelter\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1330\"  \/>Cheng-Tsung Feng has created a series of floating wooden huts<\/p>\n<p>Commissioned by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swiio.com\/hotels\/yilan\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Swiio Villa Yilan<\/a> hotel, Feng created four wooden <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/huts\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">huts<\/a> of varying sizes for a group of roughly 25 call ducks inhabiting a pond at the site.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The structures were intended to provide a safe, comfortable and weather-resistant habitat for the ducks, especially during Taiwan&#8217;s intensely hot summers and frequent typhoons,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chengtsung.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cheng-Tsung Feng<\/a> told Dezeen.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2246025 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/nesting-plan-call-duck-cheng-tsung-feng-taiwan-animal-design-architecture_dezeen_2364_col_0-852x479..jpeg\" alt=\"Circular wooden duck shelter from above\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1330\"  \/>The four wooden huts provide shelter for ducks at Swiio Villa Yilan<\/p>\n<p>The behavioural patterns of the resident ducks directly informed the design and placement of huts, with initial research showing that they tended to gather in four distinct groups in different areas of the pond.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We noted their preference for dry, secluded corners where they gather leaves and straw to form hidden nests,&#8221; said Feng.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2246058 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/nesting-plan-call-duck-cheng-tsung-feng-taiwan-animal-design-architecture_dezeen_2364_col_13-852x479.jpeg\" alt=\"Duck peeping out of pinecone-shaped hut\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1330\"  \/>Overlapping layers of wooden slats are arranged in a pinecone-like form<\/p>\n<p>To optimise the final design, Feng then created a prototype, and an observation team documented the ducks&#8217; daily interactions with the structure.<\/p>\n<p>Following this initial period of research and testing, a number of adjustments were made to the design, including changes to buoyancy, floor height, entrance design and ventilation.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2024\/06\/28\/nicer-design-bird-house-numbers\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"191\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/numbird-by-nicer-design-hero-sq_dezeen_2364_col_1-191x191.jpg\" class=\"excludeLightbox wp-post-image\" alt=\"A photograph of the front of a white house exterior, with a brown wooden door and wooden address markers next to it, with a bird flying towards them.\" decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\"  \/><\/p>\n<p> Nicer Design creates bird-box house numbers to encourage urban birdlife\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Built primarily using pine <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/wood\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">wood<\/a>, the shelters were clad with angular, overlapping slats to maximise ventilation, shade and water drainage.
