His wife, Emma Heming, shared that while celebrations are ‘different,’ they find joy in being present with him and maintaining familiar traditions. Despite the challenges of dementia, the family emphasizes that laughter and joy still exist. The holiday season is here, and it may not necessarily mean the same for all. For Bruce Willis’ family, it is ‘different’. The Die Hard star is battling frontotemporal dementia (FTD). The actor’s wife, Emma Heming, recently opened up about how she and her family cope during the holiday season amid his health battle. “It’s joyous. It’s just different,” Heming Willis, 47, told People magazine recently. “Bruce loved Christmas, and we love celebrating it with him. It just looks different, so we’ve kind of adapted to that.” Bruce Willis, 70, was diagnosed with aphasia in 2022, followed by frontotemporal dementia (FTD). Following the diagnosis, his family announced that the actor is stepping away from his decades-long acting career.

The holiday season can be different

Emma Heming acknowledged that for families of those with dementia, the holiday season can be ‘so hard’. “I think it’s important to put Die Hard on because it’s a Christmas movie,” she said. “You have to learn and adapt and make new memories, bring in the same traditions that you had before.” She also spoke about adapting to new traditions and finding joy in the moment. “Life goes on. It just goes on. Dementia is hard, but there is still joy in it. I think it’s important that we don’t paint such a negative picture around dementia. We are still laughing. There is still joy. It just looks different,” she told the outlet. The couple tied the knot in 2009 and share two daughters, Mabel, 12, and Evelyn, 10. Willis also has three adult daughters—Rumer, Scout, and Tallulah—from his previous marriage to actress Demi Moore.

Understanding FTD

Frontotemporal dementia is not one condition but a group of disorders that can affect behaviour, personality, language, and movement. According to the National Institute on Ageing, FTD is a neurological disorder that occurs when nerve cells in the frontal and temporal lobes of the brain are lost. This causes the lobes to shrink. It affects the areas of the brain that control personality, emotions, behaviour, and speech. FTD typically affects people at younger ages, often between 45 and 64 years old, though it can occur earlier or later.

Symptoms of FTD

According to NHS UK, the symptoms of FTD usually cause changes in behaviour or language problems at first. These signs occur gradually and get worse slowly over time. The behavioural and personality changes include: • being insensitive or rude • acting impulsively or rashly • loss of inhibitions • seeming subdued • losing interest in people and things • losing drive and motivation • inability to empathise with others, seeming cold and selfish • repetitive behaviours, such as humming, hand-rubbing, and foot-tapping, or routines such as walking exactly the same route repetitively • a change in food preferences, such as suddenly liking sweet foods, and poor table manners • compulsive eating, alcohol drinking, and/or smoking • neglecting personal hygiene It also leads to language problems, affects mental abilities, and causes physical problems such as slow, stiff movements, similar to Parkinson’s disease. There is no treatment to cure, or slow down FTD, only the symptoms are treated.

Moving forward

For the Willis family, holiday celebrations now mean retaining their meaning even in tough circumstances like these. Emma Heming expressed that the family’s life is ‘very simple’. “It always actually has been. I think that just being able to be present with him, that is the joy. Me being able to be his wife with him. Those are the moments,” she said. They have their own share of challenges, but they make it work.Note: The information provided in this article is for educational purposes only and is not intended as medical advice.
