Donald Trump said on Sunday there was a \u201cgood chance\u201d of a deal to end the war in Ukraine after the latest US negotiations with Kyiv<\/a>, as his special envoy prepares to travel to Russia for follow-up talks. After hours of what both sides called \u201cproductive\u201d discussions in Florida, US secretary of state Marco Rubio said \u201cmore work\u201d was required. A source in Kyiv\u2019s delegation characterised the discussions as \u201cnot easy\u201d. The talks set the stage for a visit to Moscow by Trump envoy Steve Witkoff, who is expected to discuss Ukraine with Russian president Vladimir Putin on Tuesday. \u201cUkraine\u2019s got some difficult little problems,\u201d Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One, referring to a corruption investigation that recently forced President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to sack his chief of staff and top negotiator. \u201cBut I think that there\u2019s a good chance we can make a deal.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rubio earlier told reporters that the Florida talks were \u201cvery productive\u201d but \u201cthere\u2019s more work to be done\u201d. \u201cWe continue to be realistic about how difficult this is, but optimistic.\u201d<\/p>\n

The talks \u2013 also attended by Witkoff and Trump\u2019s son-in-law Jared Kushner \u2013 come as Kyiv faces pressure on military and political fronts. At least six people were killed and dozens wounded<\/a> across Ukraine over the weekend, report Dan Sabbagh and Jane Clinton. A drone attack on the outskirts of Kyiv on Saturday night killed one person and wounded 11, the regional governor said. A Ukrainian security source said Kyiv was responsible for attacks by naval drones on two oil tankers<\/a> off Turkey\u2019s Black Sea coast that it believed were covertly transporting sanctioned Russian oil. And the Ukrainian government has faced turbulence as Zelenskyy\u2019s powerful chief of staff, Andriy Yermak, was forced to resign on Friday<\/a> after his flat was searched by anti-corruption officials investigating a kickback scheme.<\/p>\n

The Turkish government has condemned the Ukrainian drone attacks on two Russian \u201cshadow fleet\u201d oil tankers off Turkey\u2019s Black Sea coast. Foreign ministry spokesperson Oncu Keceli said the attacks on the Kairos and Virat vessels happened inside Turkey\u2019s exclusive economic zone and \u201chave posed serious risks to navigation, life, property and environmental safety in the region\u201d. Ukraine has said it used naval drones to hit the tankers in quick succession late Friday afternoon. Crew members onboard both vessels were reported to be safe. The OpenSanctions database described the vessels as part of a fleet of ships used to evade sanctions imposed on Russia over its war in Ukraine.<\/p>\n
