Artificial intelligence (AI) is almost everywhere. There\u2019s hardly any industry that is not evaluating the use of AI. Even the film industry may use generative AI for characters in the future. This possibility haunts Oscar-winning Director James Cameron. Cameron is the director of “The Terminator” and the Avatar franchise. Despite having used technology in the past for his own films, he is drawing a clear line on AI.<\/p>\n
In a conversation with CBS\u2019 Sunday Morning, James Cameron recalled the time when he was under scrutiny for using technology in Avatar. He claimed that critics accused him of trying to replace characters with graphics, rather than actually understanding what he planned to do.<\/p>\n

Cameron said, \u201cFor years, there was this sense that, ‘Oh, they’re doing something strange with computers and they’re replacing actors.\u2019\u201d He added, \u201cWhen in fact, once you really drill down and you see what we’re doing, it’s a celebration of the actor-director moment.\u201d<\/p>\n
Now, Hollywood is entering an era when some people are trying to create AI-generated performers, such as Tilly Norwood. The Oscar-winner made it clear that he does not want to see AI performers take over the film industry, a scenario that horrifies him already. Cameron explained, “Now, go to the other end of the spectrum, and you\u2019ve got generative AI, where they can make up a character.\u201d<\/p>\n

James Cameron asserted that this was exactly what he never wants to do with technology in films. He added, \u201cThey can make up an actor. They can make up a performance from scratch with a text prompt. It\u2019s like, no. That\u2019s horrifying to me. That\u2019s the opposite. That\u2019s exactly what we\u2019re not doing.”<\/p>\n
The conversation around AI performers came to the forefront in September, when comedian and producer Eline Van der Velden introduced Tilly Norwood, an AI-generated performer, at the Zurich Summit. According to Van der Velden, multiple talent agencies showed interest in Norwood. Though this was met with widespread backlash from the industry.<\/p>\n
The use of AI is not just limited to filmmaking, the internet is already flooded with AI-generated music and videos on social media.<\/p>\n
