\n\tA London audience was treated to a first tease of Run Away<\/a>, a new\u00a0series adaptation of a Harlan Coben<\/a> thriller novel starring James Nesbitt<\/a>,\u00a0Ruth Jones<\/a>,\u00a0Minnie Driver<\/a> and\u00a0Alfred Enoch<\/a>, on Monday.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe first episode of the show, which will debut on Netflix<\/a>\u00a0on Jan. 1, following the 2025 success of the limited thriller series\u00a0Missing You<\/a>, screened at the BFI Southbank in the British capital Monday night, followed by a Q&A with Jones, Nesbitt, Coben and lead writer and executive producer Danny Brocklehurst.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cAfter his eldest daughter, Paige, runs away from home, angst-ridden Simon is determined to reunite the family,\u201d reads a synopsis. The series uses the tagline: \u201cHow far would you go to bring her back?\u201d Run Away<\/a>\u00a0is one of 13 titles from best-selling author Coben produced for Netflix. It will feature eight hourlong episodes. In keeping with previous Coben adaptations,\u00a0Run Away\u00a0is relocating the story of the novel from the U.S. to the U.K. Filming took place in and around Manchester and the North West of England.<\/p>\n

\n\tAsked about that setting, Brocklehurst quipped he liked to shoot \u201cnear my house.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tCoben said Monday that the show is about \u201cthe emotional journey that the parents are going through with a child who\u2019s suffering from addiction,\u201d in addition to a mystery that his fans have come to enjoy.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe idea all started with a worry he had about his daughter Charlotte, who has an associate producer credit on Run Away. \u201cI found some drug paraphernalia in her room when she was a teenager. But she swears it was a friend\u2019s pipe,\u201d he recalled. \u201cAnd of course, my mind spiraled, which is what it does.\u201d When he couldn\u2019t think of how to start off the addiction story that this inspired, he was sitting in Central Park one day at Strawberry Fields. \u201cA busker was miming a John Lennon tune. \u2018And I thought, What if that\u2019s the missing daughter,’\u201d and he figured out the rest of the story from there.<\/p>\n

\n\tNesbitt and Jones on Monday lauded the collaborative approach and atmosphere on the production. Coben series veteran Nesbitt praised the author for making his stories about people and the challenges they face, offering: \u201cWe talk about the universality of Harlan\u2019s work, but I think there\u2019s a timelessness to it as well.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tNesbitt has played cops in Coben stories before, but in Run Away, it is different. \u201cThis is a character who\u2019s a father,\u201d he shared. \u201cI am a father, of girls. It\u2019s something that unquestionably you tap into.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tJones shared that she was nervous about getting to play opposite Nesbitt. \u201cI was a little trepidatious about it because I have always been a big admirer of his work. He\u2019s a brilliant actor, and I was feeling slightly fraudulent,\u201d she shared. \u201cI was thinking, \u2018God, am I going to be able to act with him?\u2019 And then we did this scene together. \u2026 I was really nervous, but instantly we just seemed to click.\u201d Nesbitt agreed.<\/p>\n

\n\tWith Nesbitt\u2019s character Simon married to Ingrid, played by Driver, Jones emphasized about her character Elena\u2019s interactions with Simon: \u201cIt\u2019s a really lovely onscreen relationship because, well, spoiler alert, it\u2019s not a romance, alright?\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tShe drew laughter when she added: \u201cThat\u2019s quite refreshing. It\u2019s refreshing to see that male-female friendship.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe actress also shared: \u201cYou can be friends with someone for a reason, a season or a lifetime. And I think that they come together for this one reason, and they empathize with one another, and they sympathize.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tJones gave a shoutout to the costume designer\u2019s choices for Elena, which are more unusual than fashionable, saying; \u201cI quite like the fact that they belie [her character and determination], and I love the courage of how she dressed. It was quite out there, really.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tRun Away\u00a0is produced by Quay Street Productions, part of ITV Studios.\u00a0Coben serves as executive producer through his company, Final Twist Productions. Quay Street Productions\u2019\u00a0Nicola Shindler<\/a> and Richard Fee<\/a>\u00a0are also executive producers.<\/p>\n
