the rocket booster Wednesday \u2013 the first such trial by a Chinese firm as the country\u2019s growing commercial space sector races to catch up with American rivals like SpaceX.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmipmipps00013b6na2b5zyi2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Beijing-based LandSpace, one of the sector\u2019s leading firms, launched its Zhuque-3 rocket into space from a remote, desert launch site in northwestern China.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmipmipps00023b6n4fpetfyk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The rocket entered orbit as planned, but its first stage \u2013 the portion of the vehicle that propels it at liftoff \u2013 did not successfully return to a landing site, instead crashing down, the company said in a statement.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmipmipps00033b6nysest7b9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cAn anomaly occurred after the first-stage engine ignited during the landing phase, preventing a soft landing on the designated recovery pad,\u201d the statement said. \u201cThe debris landed at the edge of the recovery area, resulting in a failed recovery test.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Reusable rockets are seen as key, because the technology can significantly lower the cost and turn-around time of rocket launches \u2013 a distinct advantage as global firms race to build out satellite networks and eye a future space travel industry.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmipni83e002a3b6ntgejvzcz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            They also provide a strategic advantage for a country as space increasingly becomes a domain linked to military power and defense capabilities on Earth.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmipmippt00063b6nfzkjlb3o@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Reusable rockets form the backbone of the success of Elon Musk\u2019s firm SpaceX, which hashed out how to land and reuse rocket boosters nearly a decade ago and now dominates the global launch market.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmipmippt00073b6n9masd65t@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            American SpaceX competitor Blue Origin completed its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/11\/13\/science\/new-glenn-launch-blue-origin-mars\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">first successful landing of the first stage<\/a> of its New Glenn rocket last month, while launching a pair of satellites destined for Mars. The accomplishment followed a failed booster landing attempt made by the company earlier this year. SpaceX also did not succeed in its first attempts.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmipmjm5l000b3b6nddc090bp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            LandSpace\u2019s Wednesday attempt was an \u201cimpressive\u201d feat that appeared to be upwards of \u201c90% successful,\u201d according to space expert Blaine Curcio, founder of Orbital Gateway Consulting.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmipn3eor000e3b6nh6kxsskd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt looks like it was really a largely successful attempt, and that there\u2019s either a structural issue or an igniter issue, or an engine issue. That will take some time to fix, but it will not take years to fix,\u201d Curcio said, pointing to how the rocket came down close to its expected landing zone.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmipn6dqp000h3b6nse3z4yje@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cAll of those things are generally good signs for the maturity of the commercial space sector in China,\u201d he added.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/img-5438-20251203064346721.JPG\" alt=\"A Chinese reusable booster explodes in historic first orbital test in Alxa League, Inner Mongolia, China, on December 3, 2025.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1426\" width=\"2535\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmipn93g9000x3b6nd5m2v83g@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            LandSpace\u2019s ambitions have been closely watched by competitors at home and abroad, with Musk commenting on the Zhuque-3 launch preparations in recent months.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmipn93g9000y3b6nkhc8bu1e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Musk posted on X in October that the company had \u201cadded aspects\u201d of his vehicle Starship \u201cto a Falcon 9 architecture, which would enable it to beat Falcon 9,\u201d referring to SpaceX\u2019s reusable launch vehicle.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmipn93g9000z3b6nco1718uq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But he also predicted it would take the company \u201cover 5 years to reach Falcon 9 levels of reliability and production\/launch rate.\u201d By that time \u201cSpaceX will have transitioned to Starship and be doing over 100 times the annual payload to orbit of Falcon,\u201d he added.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmipn93g900103b6ndtua64i3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Starship, the most powerful rocket ever constructed, remains under development but is meant to be \u201cfully reusable\u201d \u2013 meaning SpaceX intends to also return and reuse the upper stage of the rocket, which has never been done before.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmipne9uq001h3b6nq3day389@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Landspace, however, has lofty ambitions, too.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmipne9uq001i3b6n6nnhaj1d@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In an interview with Chinese state media in 2023, LandSpace founder and CEO Zhang Changwu acknowledged that China\u2019s commercial rocket development \u201cstill lags behind SpaceX,\u201d but if the company continues in the \u201cright development direction\u201d they would \u201cone day be able to match SpaceX\u2019s capabilities.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmipne9uq001j3b6nrw4j48i4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Zhang also told state media last year that from 2026 the firm would begin undertaking spacecraft launch missions for China\u2019s Tiangong Space Station. That would be a first in terms of commercial spaceflight supporting national missions \u2013 and make having a reusable system even more critical.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmipne9uq001k3b6nyy762vi8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The firm has already marked other major successes, including the world\u2019s first successful orbital launch of its Zhuque-2 methane-liquid oxygen rocket in 2023, beating international rivals also developing rockets with what\u2019s seen as a cleaner-burning and more efficient fuel. (SpaceX\u2019s Starship is also powered by methane, but the vehicle so far has only flown suborbital test flights.)\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmipne9uq001l3b6nlkp3chfx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            LandSpace is among a handful of Chinese firms that are developing reusable rocket technology. Commercial firms \u2013 with Beijing\u2019s blessing \u2013 have become an increasingly important part of China\u2019s space innovation, mirroring a model that\u2019s seen success in the US.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmipnr5tv002o3b6nqnp3wa07@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That industry development comes as leader Xi Jinping in recent years has highlighted the aerospace sector as a \u201cstrategic emerging industry,\u201d with the country\u2019s upcoming five-year plan expected to include a focus on accelerating the development of the country into a \u201cstrong aerospace nation.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmipne9uq001m3b6nr01sdn2w@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Over the past decade, multiple private firms have conducted orbital launch missions, and several developers have conducted initial land tests of reusable rocket technology.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmipne9uq001n3b6np6x3zh8q@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Both state-owned Shanghai Academy of Spaceflight Technology\u2019s Long March 12A and private firm Space Pioneer\u2019s Tianlong-3 are thought to be close to attempting their own orbital test flights of reusable rockets, according to state media reports.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmipne9uq001o3b6nuk1zo5t5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cFrom 2015 up to this year 2025, exactly 10 years, China\u2019s commercial space sector has essentially gone from nothing to a new critical point,\u201d Liu Yuzhang, director of Taibo Research Institute, a Chinese think tank focusing on aerospace industries, told CNN.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmipne9uq001q3b6nbd1sengg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            On Monday, the country\u2019s space authority announced that it had established a new internal department to oversee and develop its commercial space sector.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmipne9uq001r3b6noj56l8af@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And last week it rolled out a two-year <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnsa.gov.cn\/n6758823\/n6758839\/c10719382\/content.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">action plan<\/a> to integrate the country\u2019s commercial space sector into the national space development strategy.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmipne9uq001s3b6n7tbg6n40@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But while the sector appears poised for more rapid advancement, those watching closely say much work remains, and failure is part of the process.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmipnh5et00243b6n5d0gh26v@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Even when there is failure, \u201cthere is the mindset of returning to zero and continuing rapid, ongoing iteration,\u201d Liu told CNN ahead of the launch.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmipnh5et00253b6n5zq09qnl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The long-term goal, he added, is to reduce rocket launch costs and further improve the ability to send satellites into orbit, including delivering supplies to the space station, and even contributing to
