Schiphol is taking\u00a0an important step\u00a0towards improving the quality of ground handling and the work done by ground handlers. On 4 December, the tendering procedure will begin for the\u00a0selection\u00a0of three ground handling companies who will\u00a0be responsible for\u00a0the baggage process and work\u00a0done\u00a0around\u00a0aircraft, such as loading and unloading baggage, placing chocks under\u00a0aircraft\u00a0wheels\u00a0and connecting ground power units. With this tender, the airport aims to\u00a0improve quality of service\u00a0and ensure better working conditions for thousands of employees who contribute to safe and efficient operations every day. There are currently six parties carrying out these activities.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Ground handling companies and their employees play a crucial role at Schiphol. They ensure that passengers and baggage enter and leave the\u00a0aircraft\u00a0on time and that all work around the\u00a0aircraft\u00a0is carried out with care. By outsourcing ground handling,\u00a0we can intentionally select our partners and organise the collaboration more effectively.\u00a0<\/p>\n
From open market to higher standard\u00a0\u00a0
The current open market is characterised by fierce competition and limited control over quality. The introduction of a sector-wide collective labour agreement\u00a0(CLA)\u00a0in 2023 was\u00a0an important step\u00a0towards improving working conditions. This tender follows the decision by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management, on the initiative of Schiphol, to work with a select group of handling companies.\u00a0They will work at the airport under a concession agreement based on contracts they\u00a0enter into\u00a0with the airlines.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
Quality requirements
Reducing the number of handling companies offers opportunities for smarter and more efficient organisation.\u00a0Ground handling companies\u00a0are\u00a0being\u00a0asked to make more joint use of handling equipment, which creates space on the\u00a0apron\u00a0and ensures more sustainable use of resources. In addition, we are\u00a0setting\u00a0further requirements on the working conditions\u00a0for\u00a0employees and the quality of service.\u00a0Travellers\u00a0will notice this in the form of shorter waiting times for their\u00a0baggage\u00a0on arrival. The award criteria for this tender have been carefully drawn up and consulted with airlines, handlers,\u00a0stakeholders\u00a0and the trade union.\u00a0<\/p>\n
