OHCHR<\/a>\u00a0is\u00a0calling for\u00a0more action\u00a0to end\u00a0the\u00a0violence\u00a0and\u00a0achieve justice.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhile the interim authorities have taken encouraging steps towards addressing past violations,\u00a0these steps are only the beginning of what needs to be done,\u201d\u00a0spokesperson\u00a0Thameen Al-Kheethan\u00a0told<\/a>\u00a0journalists in\u00a0Geneva.<\/p>\n

Summary executions and arbitrary killing<\/p>\n

Since last December,\u00a0Syria\u2019s\u00a0interim authorities have\u00a0established\u00a0national commissions for transitional justice and missing persons, among other\u00a0measures.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

A\u00a0draft law on transitional justice has been announced,\u00a0and trials have\u00a0begun into\u00a0deadly\u00a0violence that occurred in coastal areas in March.<\/p>\n

\u201cYet, we continue to see distressing accounts of summary executions, arbitrary killings and abductions, mainly targeting members of certain communities and individuals accused of affiliation with the former government,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Minorities\u00a0affected<\/p>\n

Hundreds\u00a0have been killed\u00a0over the past year\u00a0by the\u00a0security forces\u00a0and affiliated groups,\u00a0elements associated with the former government, local armed\u00a0groups\u00a0and unidentified armed individuals.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Other reported violations and abuses include sexual violence, arbitrary detentions, destruction of homes, forced evictions, and\u00a0restrictions on freedoms of expression and peaceful assembly.<\/p>\n

Alawite,\u00a0Druze,\u00a0Christian\u00a0and Bedouin\u00a0communities were\u00a0mainly affected\u00a0by the violence, which\u00a0has been fed by rising hate speech both on\u00a0and offline.<\/p>\n

Incursions by Israeli forces<\/p>\n

\u201cThe past year has also been marked by repeated Israeli military operations, including incursions, and occupation of additional territory,\u201d Mr. Al-Kheethan\u00a0added.\u00a0<\/p>\n

OHCHR has\u00a0received reports of civilian casualties, as well as arrests and home searches.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0spokesperson\u00a0noted\u00a0that the integration of former armed groups into\u00a0Syria\u2019s\u00a0new\u00a0security forces has so far happened hastily and without proper human rights vetting.<\/p>\n

This is crucial\u00a0to\u00a0ensure\u00a0that perpetrators of serious violations do not enter their ranks and to prevent further violations.<\/p>\n

Accountability essential for Syria\u2019s transition<\/p>\n

\u201cAll violations \u2013 past and present \u2013 must be independently, thoroughly and transparently investigated, and those responsible held to account,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0UN High Commissioner for Human Rights,\u00a0Volker T\u00fcrk,\u00a0has\u00a0called\u00a0on the authorities to\u00a0take action to address\u00a0the root causes of the violations.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
