PUEO will focus on detecting tiny, high-energy particles called neutrinos, while GAPS will hunt for particles related to dark matter. This initiative is all about doing important science in a cost-effective way. PUEO\u2019s goal is to detect neutrinos, tiny particles that travel across the universe, undisturbed by the environment. Credit: NASA\/Scott Battaion<br \/>GAPS Mission: Chasing the Secret of Dark Matter<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/gaps1.astro.ucla.edu\/gaps\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">GAPS mission<\/a> is another key part of this scientific campaign, focusing on the mysterious dark matter that makes up most of the universe. Dark matter is invisible and hasn\u2019t been fully understood, even though scientists know it exists because of its gravitational effects. GAPS hopes to find anti-matter particles that are believed to be produced when <a href=\"https:\/\/dailygalaxy.com\/2025\/10\/dark-matter-might-be-tinting-the-universe\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"107169\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">dark matter<\/a> decays.<\/p>\n<p>A single detection of one of these particles could change everything we know about the universe. They\u2019re designed to stay in balance with the surrounding atmosphere, which is key for long, uninterrupted flights over<a href=\"https:\/\/dailygalaxy.com\/2025\/07\/332-submarine-canyons-antarctica\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"96211\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> Antarctica<\/a>. The zero-pressure balloons maintain an equilibrium with their surroundings, making them perfect for the harsh conditions of the polar region.<\/p>\n<p>NASA\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/wallops\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Wallops Flight Facility<\/a> oversees the balloon program, with Peraton handling mission planning and engineering.
