<\/p>\nOne of Britain\u2019s most acclaimed photographers, Martin Parr, died on Saturday at age 73, his foundation said on Sunday.<\/p>\n
A prolific photographer and collector, Parr obsessively documented his surroundings for over 50 years.<\/p>\n
During this time, his vibrant photos of people set against backdrops of seaside towns, village fairs and public swimming pools captured the attention of an international fan base and celebrated the quirks and intricacies of everyday British life.<\/p>\n
The documentary photographer died at his home in Bristol, in southwest England, the statement posted on the website of the Martin Parr Foundation said.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe is survived by his wife Susie, his daughter Ellen, his sister Vivien and his grandson George. The family asks for privacy at this time,\u201d the statement added.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Martin Parr Foundation and Magnum Photos will work together to preserve and share Martin\u2019s legacy. More information on this will follow in due course. Martin will be greatly missed,\u201d the foundation said.<\/p>\n
He was a member of the renowned Magnum Photos, an international cooperative of photojournalists, and was seen as one of the best-known photographers of his generation.<\/p>\n
His photographic legacy has been captured in over 100 published books, according to Magnum<\/a>.<\/p>\n A selection of Parr’s photographs on show during his 2019 exhibition “Only Human: Photographs by Martin Parr” at the National Portrait Gallery in London. – Tolga Akmen\/AFP\/Getty Images<\/p>\n Speaking to CNN<\/a> in 2019 following the release of his book \u201cOnly Human\u201d \u2014 a coffee-table tome filled with characteristically eccentric, hyper-real portraits \u2014 Parr described photography as \u201calmost like a form of therapy.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cWhen I\u2019m out shooting I\u2019m looking almost for a little story, for a little vignette, where there\u2019s going to be some tension, some ambiguity, some contradictions\u2026 a peg to hang a story on really,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n Parr\u2019s work has been collected by some of the leading museums in the world, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Tate in London and the Centre Pompidou in Paris, according to the agency.<\/p>\n Parr curated two photography festivals, Arles in 2004 and Brighton Photo Biennial in 2010. He also curated a Barbican Centre exhibition in London in 2016.<\/p>\n In 2021, he received a CBE, or Commander in the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, from Queen Elizabeth II for his services to photography.<\/p>\n Parr, an outspoken critic of Brexit, shoots a portrait in Westminster on the day the UK’s Parliament reconvened after summer recess to debate the country’s departure from the European Union. – Claire Doherty\/In Pictures\/Getty Images<\/p>\n Tributes poured in from across the arts sector over the weekend, including from some of the world\u2019s leading artists and photographers.<\/p>\n On Instagram, celebrated American photographer Joel Meyerowitz described<\/a> Parr, his friend of 50 years, as \u201ca legend in the world of photography,\u201d adding that \u201chis wisdom and visual humor will be greatly missed.\u201d<\/p>\n The Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer David Turnley meanwhile posted<\/a> a message on Facebook saying Parr\u2019s work \u201cwill live forever,\u201d and that his \u201cgenerous spirit that touched me and so many so deeply, will never be forgotten.\u201d<\/p>\n This article has been updated to include reactions to Parr\u2019s death.
