{"id":174167,"date":"2025-12-08T15:09:08","date_gmt":"2025-12-08T15:09:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/174167\/"},"modified":"2025-12-08T15:09:08","modified_gmt":"2025-12-08T15:09:08","slug":"sun-unleashes-intense-x-class-solar-flare-triggering-radio-blackouts-across-australia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/174167\/","title":{"rendered":"Sun unleashes intense X-class solar flare, triggering radio blackouts across Australia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"649275d0-0e9f-420f-baed-c15df94fb3de\">The sun erupted with a powerful X1.1-class solar flare in the early hours of this morning (Dec. 8), briefly knocking out radio communications across Australia and parts of southeast Asia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">The impulsive eruption, which peaked at 12:01 a.m. EST (0501 GMT), came from <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/sunspots-formation-discovery-observations\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/sunspots-formation-discovery-observations\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sunspot<\/a> region AR4298 as it makes its way towards <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/58-the-sun-formation-facts-and-characteristics.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/58-the-sun-formation-facts-and-characteristics.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the sun<\/a>&#8216;s western limb. It will rotate out of view in the next couple of days.<\/p>\n<p>A <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/coronal-mass-ejections-cme\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/coronal-mass-ejections-cme\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">coronal mass ejection<\/a> (CME) \u2014 a plume of plasma and magnetic field \u2014 was hurled into space alongside the eruption. However, early analyses of satellite <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/what-is-a-coronagraph.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/what-is-a-coronagraph.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">coronagraph<\/a> imagery suggest this CME is not Earth-directed.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p class=\"vanilla-image-block\" style=\"padding-top:59.79%;\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/PXMRWYLa7STFFBgyrdwX6W.jpg\" alt=\"graphic detailing the events that unfolded during the X1.1 solar flare eruption on Dec. 8. (Image credit: NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center)<\/p>\n<p id=\"070bd26c-b29e-426c-a7f4-2a74640cb6f1\">The <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/solar-flares-effects-classification-formation\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/solar-flares-effects-classification-formation\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">solar flare<\/a> occurred during an already active week on the sun. Several CMEs from earlier solar flares are forecast to impact <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Earth<\/a> between Dec. 8-9, prompting space weather forecasters at <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.swpc.noaa.gov\/news\/strong-g3-geomagnetic-storm-watch-valid-09-dec-2025\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.swpc.noaa.gov\/news\/strong-g3-geomagnetic-storm-watch-valid-09-dec-2025\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">NOAA&#8217;s Space Weather Prediction Center<\/a> and the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/weather.metoffice.gov.uk\/specialist-forecasts\/space-weather\" data-url=\"https:\/\/weather.metoffice.gov.uk\/specialist-forecasts\/space-weather\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">U.K. Met Office <\/a>to issue geomagnetic storm watches, including a chance of strong-moderate (G2-G3) level storming, which could see <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15139-northern-lights-auroras-earth-facts-sdcmp.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15139-northern-lights-auroras-earth-facts-sdcmp.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">northern lights<\/a> visible at high to mid-latitudes.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-aae6c27e-457c-4d3f-8382-a9b508f16c83\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/>What are solar flares? <a id=\"elk-seasonal\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"7bdb199d-237b-49f6-a666-25182bc026e6-0\">Solar flares are caused when magnetic energy builds up in the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17160-sun-atmosphere.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17160-sun-atmosphere.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sun&#8217;s atmosphere<\/a> and is released in an intense burst of electromagnetic radiation.<\/p>\n<p>They are <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/mission_pages\/sunearth\/news\/X-class-flares.html#:~:text=Solar%20flares%20are%20classified%20according,M%20and%20X%2C%20the%20largest.&amp;text=Solar%20flares%20are%20giant%20explosions,high%20speed%20particles%20into%20space.\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/mission_pages\/sunearth\/news\/X-class-flares.html#:~:text=Solar%20flares%20are%20classified%20according,M%20and%20X%2C%20the%20largest.&amp;text=Solar%20flares%20are%20giant%20explosions,high%20speed%20particles%20into%20space.\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">categorized by size into lettered groups<\/a> according to strength:<\/p>\n<p>X-class: The strongestM-class: 10 times weaker than XC, B and A-class: Progressively weaker, with A-class flares typically having no noticeable effect on Earth.<\/p>\n<p id=\"7abce33c-ecf7-4e79-abd0-29dc03fcdd78\">Within each class, a numerical value indicates the flare&#8217;s relative strength. But during a strong flare, the lower, denser parts of the ionosphere become highly ionized instead. Radio waves passing through these layers collide more often with particles, losing energy as they go.
