The photograph, taken from Cerro Pach\u00f3n in Chile by <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/noirlab.edu\/public\/images\/iotw2548a\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/noirlab.edu\/public\/images\/iotw2548a\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">NOIRLab Audiovisual Ambassador Petr Hor\u00e1lek, <\/a>captures a classic but elusive atmospheric trick of the light:<a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/green-flash-earth-sunrise-sunset\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/green-flash-earth-sunrise-sunset\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> the green flash.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-5ec28b19-106d-46ec-97fc-1e5680d2aeaa\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/>What is it?<\/p>\n<p id=\"b70aae2c-ee29-4a78-8d59-5773d52cde6e\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">Despite the dramatic name, a green flash isn&#8217;t an explosion or a burst of energy. It&#8217;s simply sunlight being bent and split by <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17683-earth-atmosphere.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17683-earth-atmosphere.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Earth&#8217;s atmosphere.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"b70aae2c-ee29-4a78-8d59-5773d52cde6e-1\">White sunlight is made of all the colors of the rainbow. But as Earth rotates and the sun approaches the horizon, its light has to pass through a very thick slice of the atmosphere. That air acts like a giant prism, refracting (bending) the light slightly and separating colors based on their wavelength. Shorter wavelengths \u2014 blue and green \u2014 are bent more strongly than red and orange.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p>At the very last moment before sunset (or the first moment after sunrise), the sun&#8217;s disk is already mostly hidden below the horizon. What you&#8217;re seeing is really a stack of slightly displaced images: the &#8220;red sun,&#8221; the &#8220;orange sun,&#8221; the &#8220;yellow sun,&#8221; and so on, all shifted by tiny different amounts. The lower colors disappear first. For a brief instant, the uppermost surviving layer is dominated by green, forming a thin glowing band at the top edge of the sun: the green rim. If the conditions are just right \u2014 clear air, a sharp horizon, the right layering in the atmosphere \u2014 that skinny rim looks like a small, detached green spark: the famous green flash.<\/p>\n<p>In reality, a green rim is there at every sunset. It&#8217;s just usually so thin, and so brief (a second or two), that our eyes can&#8217;t pick it out. The shape, height, and duration of a green flash depend on how temperature, pressure, and density vary with altitude. Layers of warm and cool air can act like stacked lenses, creating mirage effects and stretching or squashing the sun&#8217;s image. The air bends different colors by different amounts, slightly smearing out starlight into a little rainbow. Instruments called atmospheric dispersion correctors are designed to counteract that effect.
