\n\tItalian film body Anica has revealed the 24 films submitted as candidates to be Italy<\/a>\u2019s Best International Feature Film<\/a> in the 98th Academy Awards<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\n\tA selection committee overseen by Anica will meet on September 23 to decide which film will be put forward as the country\u2019s candidate.<\/p>\n

\n\tItaly\u2019s last submission was Maura Delpero\u2019s World War Two drama Vermiglio,<\/a> which was selected after winning the Silver Lion Grand Jury Prize in Venice in 2024, and then made it as far as the shortlist.<\/p>\n

\n\tA number of Italy\u2019s candidates for the 2026 Best International Feature Film Oscar made their debut in competition at Venice this year including Gianfranco Rosi\u2019s Below the Clouds<\/a>, which won the Special Jury Prize.<\/p>\n

\n\tOther submissions which debuted on the Lido include Pietro Marcello\u2019s Duse<\/a>, starring Valeria Bruni Tedeschi as the acting legend Eleonora Duse<\/a>, and Leonardo Di Costanzo\u2019s psychological drama Elisa<\/a><\/a>. \u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tVenice opener La Grazia by Paolo Sorrentino, who won the Best International Feature Film Oscar in 2013 for The Great Beauty, is not on the list due to its scheduled early 2026 release date. This is outside the required local release period \u2013 running from October 1, 2024 to September 30, 2025 \u2013 \u00a0to be eligible for submission.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe list also features Mario Martone\u2019s Cannes 2025 Palme d\u2019Or contender<\/a> <\/a>Fuori<\/a>,<\/a> starring Valeria Golino as late Italian actress and writer Goliarda Sapienza whose autobiographical book L\u2019Universit\u00e0 di Rebibbia took inspiration from her time in jail.<\/p>\n

\n\tMartone\u2019s Naples-set drama Nostalgia was Italy\u2019s entry in 2022 but was not nominated.<\/p>\n

\n\tCandidates from outside the A-List festival circuit include Margherita Ferri\u2019s teenage suicide drama\u00a0The Boy with Pink Trousers which was the top grossing local production in Italy in 2024, as well as Andrea Segre\u2019s Enrico Berlinguer biopic The Great Ambition and Cristina Comencini\u2019s post-World War Two drama The Children\u2019s Train. All three films world premiered at the Rome Film Festival last fall. <\/p>\n
