{"id":175994,"date":"2025-12-09T14:22:13","date_gmt":"2025-12-09T14:22:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/175994\/"},"modified":"2025-12-09T14:22:13","modified_gmt":"2025-12-09T14:22:13","slug":"netanyahu-refused-to-ink-deal-with-syria-on-sidelines-of-un-confab-in-september-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/175994\/","title":{"rendered":"Netanyahu refused to ink deal with Syria on sidelines of UN confab in September &#8211; report"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu refused to sign a security agreement reached between Israel and Syria in September on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, according to an Arab news report.<\/p>\n<p>Jerusalem and Damascus reached a written deal with the help of mediation by the United States in September, and a signing was planned while both Netanyahu and Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa were in New York City, unnamed informed sources told the London-based Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>But the Israeli premier backed out, the report added.<\/p>\n<p>The Prime Minister\u2019s Office dismissed the report in a statement hours after it was published as \u201ccomplete fake news.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere were contacts and meetings under US auspices, but matters were never brought to the point of agreements or understandings with Syria,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\tGet The Times of Israel&#8217;s Daily Edition<br \/>\n\t\t\tby email and never miss our top stories\n\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\tBy signing up, you agree to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/terms\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">terms<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The IDF has been deployed to nine posts inside southern Syria for nearly a year, since former president Bashar al-Assad\u2019s regime was brought down, mostly within a UN-patrolled buffer zone on the border between the countries. (Israel Defense Forces)<\/p>\n<p>Israel said it seized the areas in southern Syria last December due to fears they would fall into the wrong hands after the regime fell, and said it would hold on to them until a new security deal was signed.<\/p>\n<p>Troops, meanwhile, have been operating in areas up to around 15 kilometers (nine miles) inside Syria, aiming to capture weapons that Israel says could pose a threat to the country if they fall into the hands of \u201chostile forces.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While there was optimism in September that a deal could be signed, Reuters <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/israel-syria-talks-said-to-hit-snag-over-israeli-demand-for-humanitarian-corridor-to-druze\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reported<\/a> at the time of the assembly that contacts between Israel and Syria regarding the deal had reached a dead end due to Israel\u2019s demand to open a \u201chumanitarian corridor\u201d into the Sweida province in southern Syria \u2013 where sectarian violence has killed hundreds of people from the Druze community, which Israel has vowed to protect.<\/p>\n<p>Sources told Reuters that Israel requested early on in the talks to open a passage for delivering aid to Sweida, but Syria rejected the request, claiming it would harm its sovereignty. According to the sources, Israel repeated the demand later in the negotiations, leading progress on the agreement to stall.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/liveblog_entry\/report-israel-syria-talks-at-dead-end-with-jerusalem-only-willing-to-withdraw-troops-for-full-peace-deal\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Reports<\/a> last month suggested Israel\u2019s terms have since changed and it is now demanding full diplomatic relations, which Syria has said is not currently on the cards, further complicating the process.<\/p>\n<p>The pact being negotiated for months ahead of the General Assembly was intended to create a demilitarized zone that would include Sweida.<\/p>\n<p>\t<a href=\"https:\/\/static-cdn.toi-media.com\/www\/uploads\/2025\/11\/AP25267627998737-e1762483543420.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3683149\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/AP25267627998737-e1762483543420-640x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"375\"\/><\/a><br \/>\n\t\tSyria President Ahmed al-Sharaa approaches the podium to speak during the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly, Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2025, at U.N. headquarters.
