Netflix<\/a> and Paramount are locked in a high-stakes bidding war<\/a> for Warner Bros.\u2014a fight that could rewrite the future of Hollywood. But the biggest winner might not be the studio that ultimately lands access to blockbuster franchises like Batman, Harry Potter, and Barbie. It might be the man at the center of the chaos: Warner Bros CEO David Zaslav<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The 65-year-old executive has long been one of the media\u2019s highest-paid leaders, taking home a compensation package of $51.9 million in 2024 alone\u2014even as the company weathered layoffs<\/a> and strategy turmoil<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

And earlier this year, Zaslav signed a new contract packed with more stock options that could exceed $420 million in value, with the ultimate payout influenced by whether Netflix\u2019s $27.75-per-share cash-and-stock bid<\/a> or Paramount\u2019s hostile $30-per-share cash offer<\/a> wins out.<\/p>\n

If either deal pushes through, the package could propel Zaslav\u2019s net worth past $1 billion, according to Bloomberg<\/a>\u2014placing him alongside a rare group of non-founder CEOs like Tim Cook<\/a>, Satya Nadella<\/a>, and Jamie Dimon<\/a> who\u2019ve joined the billionaire ranks.<\/p>\n

David Zaslav missed out on being a tennis star\u2014and vowed to never be outworked again<\/p>\n

Zaslav began his career in corporate law before bringing his passion for strategy and negotiation to media\u2014joining NBC in 1989 and helping launch CNBC. He rose to become president of NBCUniversal\u2019s cable and domestic TV and new-media distribution before being tapped to lead Discovery<\/a> Communications as CEO in 2006, overseeing brands like TLC and Animal Planet.<\/p>\n

In 2022, Zaslav orchestrated the landmark Discovery-WarnerMedia merger<\/a>, handing him control over powerhouse assets, including HBO<\/a>, CNN, and TBS\u2014plus Warner Bros\u2019 vast film and TV studios.<\/p>\n

But Zaslav maintains his real edge hasn\u2019t been timing or luck; it\u2019s been an almost obsessive work ethic.<\/p>\n

He learned that lesson the hard way as a teenager chasing tennis greatness<\/a>. After showing early promise, he eased up on practicing, assuming talent alone would carry him. A few months later, reality hit. His coach\u2014professional tennis legend Althea Gibson<\/a>\u2014told him bluntly he wasn\u2019t putting in the work. And by then, it was too late.<\/p>\n

\u201cBy the time I was 14 years old, I was getting beat by most of the people I was used to beating,\u201d Zaslav recalled at Boston University\u2019s commencement<\/a> in 2023. \u201cI had already watched all the players I grew up with blow right by me. It was a painful experience. It\u2019s painful to be outworked. I lost a little piece of my identity\u2014but I vowed that day I would never be outworked again.\u201d<\/p>\n

Zaslav tells Gen Z that working hard is the most important key to success\u2014he still wakes up at 4:45 a.m. to grind<\/p>\n

Armed with his own experience, Zaslav warned Boston University graduates that talent is important, but just an \u201centry ticket.\u201d More importantly, you have to commit yourself to working hard\u2014and that doesn\u2019t stop even once you reach the top.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you really want to realize your full potential, you cannot focus solely on what you\u2019re good at\u2014that\u2019s the easy stuff,\u201d Zaslav added. \u201cYou\u2019ve got to put more effort toward the things you\u2019re not good at and work at getting better at them. It\u2019ll make a huge difference.\u201d<\/p>\n

Zaslav still puts his commitment to hard work into action every morning\u2014beginning with a 4:45 a.m. wake-up call. He then hits the streets of Manhattan, often walking an hour and a half<\/a> from his home on Central Park West down to his office on 19th Street\u2014either on the phone or listening to music.<\/p>\n

That same discipline shaped the guidance he shared with Gen Z graduates\u2014and may even put them on a billionaire track like himself one day.<\/p>\n
