(Image credit: Daniele Gasparri)<\/p>\n<p id=\"c86bafc6-09bb-4767-87de-39389bbc0e51\">passed in front of the Eagle Nebula and the iconic Pillars of Creation, from his home in the Chilean Atacama Desert on the night of Oct. 17 earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">The deep-space vista reveals the glowing green coma of <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/comets.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-redirect=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/53-comets-formation-discovery-and-exploration.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/comets.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">comet<\/a> C\/2025 R2 (SWAN), a little over a month after its closest approach to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/58-the-sun-formation-facts-and-characteristics.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/58-the-sun-formation-facts-and-characteristics.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the sun<\/a> on Sept. 12, as it journeyed through the stars of the constellation Serpens.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"c86bafc6-09bb-4767-87de-39389bbc0e51-2\">Comet C\/2025 R2 (SWAN)&#8217;s backdrop is dominated by the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16396-eagle-nebula-m16-hubble-images-pillars-of-creation.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16396-eagle-nebula-m16-hubble-images-pillars-of-creation.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Eagle Nebula<\/a> \u2014 a vast cosmic structure of dust and hydrogen-rich gas that glows with its own light, having been ionized by the radiation emitted by its population of energetic young <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/57-stars-formation-classification-and-constellations.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/57-stars-formation-classification-and-constellations.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">stars<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p id=\"85f8bd62-d752-4d40-a6fb-2899e9d76e89\">The <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/nebula-definition-types\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/nebula-definition-types\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">nebula<\/a> gets its name from its resemblance to a cosmic bird of prey and is most famous for playing host to the Pillars of Creation \u2014 a collection of stunning radiation-sculpted columns made of interstellar dust and gas. The formation has been immortalized in images captured by both the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15892-hubble-space-telescope.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15892-hubble-space-telescope.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hubble Space Telescope<\/a> and the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/james-webb-space-telescope-pillars-creation-photo\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/james-webb-space-telescope-pillars-creation-photo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">James Webb Space Telescope<\/a>, along with countless others.
