{"id":180064,"date":"2025-12-12T02:51:11","date_gmt":"2025-12-12T02:51:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/180064\/"},"modified":"2025-12-12T02:51:11","modified_gmt":"2025-12-12T02:51:11","slug":"blue-origin-targeting-dec-18-for-historic-1st-spaceflight-of-wheelchair-user","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/180064\/","title":{"rendered":"Blue Origin targeting Dec. 18 for historic 1st spaceflight of wheelchair user"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"378e433e-2ee5-4a3e-abfc-532c35588172\">A wheelchair user will reach space next week for the first time ever, if all goes according to plan.<\/p>\n<p><a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/19584-blue-origin-quiet-plans-for-spaceships.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/19584-blue-origin-quiet-plans-for-spaceships.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Blue Origin<\/a> announced today (Dec. 11) that it&#8217;s targeting Dec. 18 for its <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/private-spaceflight\/blue-origin-ns-37-tourism-launch-first-wheelchair-user-in-space\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/private-spaceflight\/blue-origin-ns-37-tourism-launch-first-wheelchair-user-in-space\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NS-37 mission<\/a>, which will send six people on a brief trip to suborbital space and back.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">One of the passengers is <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/human-spaceflight\/blue-origins-next-space-tourism-flight-will-break-new-ground-for-people-with-disabilities\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/human-spaceflight\/blue-origins-next-space-tourism-flight-will-break-new-ground-for-people-with-disabilities\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Michaela (Michi) Benthaus<\/a>, an aerospace engineer at the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22562-european-space-agency.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22562-european-space-agency.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">European Space Agency<\/a> who has used a wheelchair since suffering a spinal cord injury in a 2018 mountain-biking accident. (Image credit: Blue Origin)<\/p>\n<p id=\"341cb91f-5e9b-4e7a-b7b0-f245082c7981\">NS-37 will lift off from Blue Origin&#8217;s West Texas site on Dec. 18 during a window that opens at 9:30 a.m. EST (1430 GMT; 8:30 a.m. local time). The company will stream the action live, beginning about 40 minutes before launch.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"341cb91f-5e9b-4e7a-b7b0-f245082c7981-1\">As its name suggests, NS-37 will be the 37th overall flight of Blue Origin&#8217;s autonomous <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/40372-new-shepard-rocket.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/40372-new-shepard-rocket.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">New Shepard<\/a> vehicle, which consists of a crew capsule and a rocket, both of which are reusable.<\/p>\n<p>New Shepard flights last 10 to 12 minutes from liftoff to capsule touchdown. Passengers feel a few minutes of <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/23017-weightlessness.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/23017-weightlessness.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">weightlessness<\/a> and see Earth against the blackness of space.<\/p>\n<p>The five folks who will get this experience on NS-37 along with Benthaus are investor Joey Hyde, aerospace engineer Hans Koenigsmann, entrepreneur Neal Milch, investor Adonis Pouroulis, and self-proclaimed &#8220;space nerd&#8221; Jason Stansell.<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">Breaking space news, the latest updates on rocket launches, skywatching events and more!<\/p>\n<p>Other space nerds may recognize Koenigsmann&#8217;s name: He was one of the first employees at <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18853-spacex.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18853-spacex.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">SpaceX<\/a>, working there from 2002 to 2021. Here&#8217;s that explanation, verbatim from the company:<\/p>\n<p>The DNA symbolizes the importance and impact of science to Neal Milch.\u00a0The hippo represents Michaela (Michi) Benthaus&#8217; favorite animal. Her plush hippo, which comforted her in the hospital after her accident, will join her in space.
