Early in his career, before he reached widespread acclaim as one of Southern California\u2019s leading architects, John Lautner crafted a diminutive home in the leafy Echo Park area of Los Angeles. Completed in 1948, the single-story residence had a tidy footprint\u2014just two bedrooms and one bath\u2014and featured economical materials such as dyed-red concrete and Douglas fir, adhering to the Usonian principles laid out by Frank Lloyd Wright, Lautner\u2019s chief mentor.<\/p>\n

The Jules Salkin Residence dates to 1948 and now reflect\u2019s architect John Lautner\u2019s original vision.<\/p>\n

Known as the Jules Salkin Residence, the house remained in the same family for decades. As owners, they made a series of piecemeal alterations and enlargements, which altogether rendered the home virtually unrecognizable from its original incarnation. In 2014, when the family decided to sell, The John Lautner Foundation<\/a>\u2014which had, for unknown reasons<\/a>, never included the Salkin Residence as part of Lautner\u2019s official oeuvre\u2014revealed that Lautner was indeed the original architect, though his hand in the design was hardly visible at that point (years of deferred maintenance had also taken a toll).<\/p>\n

Enter fashion and homeware designer Trina Turk,<\/a> who spotted the listing and immediately got in touch with the broker. At the open house, she and her husband, Jonathan Skow, were among the few attendees who saw potential in the timeworn estate, per The New York Times.<\/a> Nonetheless, the house ended up sparking a bidding war between 14 parties, among them Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist, Flea. In the end, Turk and Skow prevailed, paying $1.2 million<\/a> for the retreat.<\/p>\n

Lautner\u2019s original vision included clerestory windows.<\/p>\n

During the bidding process, the couple made clear their intentions to bring Lautner\u2019s original vision back to life. Once they became owners, they tapped architect Barbara Bestor and contractor Marshall Knoll to oversee a multi-year restoration, which included removing all non-Lautner additions and replacing the exterior glass walls, which had long caused leaks and water damage. The team relied on Lautner\u2019s blueprints and drawings throughout the process.<\/p>\n

The other updates included removing the third bedroom and returning the area to its intended use as a carport. The team also sanded down the redwood siding for a fresh look without sacrificing the material, beefed up the sagging foundation, and restored the clerestory windows.<\/p>\n

All their work has clearly paid off. The home was officially designated a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument<\/a> and even won the LA Conservancy\u2019s top preservation award in 2018. It also helped when Turk and Skow decided to part with the landmark in December 2025, listing it with Brian Linder, AIA, and Mark H. Mendez of Compass for just under $2.4 million. They went into contract<\/a> just three days later.<\/p>\n
