As the burst died down, it left winds of more than 37,000 miles per second (60,000 kilometers per second) \u2014 one-fifth the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/cosmology\/what-is-the-speed-of-light\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/cosmology\/what-is-the-speed-of-light\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">speed of light<\/a> \u2014 howling in its wake.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"ece72e29-81ee-4bc1-9be1-3a8ad4508482-2\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">&#8220;We&#8217;ve not watched a black hole create winds this speedily before,&#8221;<a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sron.nl\/pijlers\/onze-mensen\/liyi-gu\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.sron.nl\/pijlers\/onze-mensen\/liyi-gu\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"> Liyi Gu<\/a>, an astronomer at Space Research Organisation Netherlands who led the research, said in a<a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eurekalert.org\/news-releases\/1108537\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.eurekalert.org\/news-releases\/1108537\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"> statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">Gu and his colleagues were studying NGC 3783&#8217;s<a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/mission\/webb\/science-overview\/science-explainers\/what-are-active-galactic-nuclei\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/mission\/webb\/science-overview\/science-explainers\/what-are-active-galactic-nuclei\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"> active galactic nucleus<\/a> (AGN), the bright, busy region surrounding a galaxy&#8217;s feeding supermassive black hole. These areas are known to suddenly flare and belch jets of material and wind into space. The researchers think the intense X-ray burst and subsequent gale they observed was powered by the black hole&#8217;s tangled <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/earths-magnetic-field\" data-auto-tag-linker=\"true\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/earths-magnetic-field\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">magnetic field<\/a>, which suddenly &#8220;untwisted.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">The team likened the process to how Earth&#8217;s sun releases enormous eruptions of plasma called <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/what-are-coronal-mass-ejections\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/what-are-coronal-mass-ejections\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">coronal mass ejections<\/a> shortly after our star&#8217;s magnetic field lines tangle and snap. However, in this case, the supermassive black hole has the mass of 30 million suns, which puts its flares and ejections &#8220;on a scale almost too big to imagine,&#8221; <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cosmos.esa.int\/web\/personal-profiles\/matteo-guainazzi#\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.cosmos.esa.int\/web\/personal-profiles\/matteo-guainazzi#\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Matteo Guainazzi<\/a>, a team member and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/european-space-agency\" data-auto-tag-linker=\"true\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/european-space-agency\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">European Space Agency<\/a> (ESA) astronomer, said in the statement. (For reference, the winds from a<a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/Space_Safety\/Space_weather\/Lessons_from_the_November_2025_solar_storm\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/Space_Safety\/Space_weather\/Lessons_from_the_November_2025_solar_storm\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"> recent coronal mass ejection<\/a> clocked in at a paltry 930 miles, or 1,500 km, per second.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">The discovery was made using ESA&#8217;s<a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/Science_Exploration\/Space_Science\/XMM-Newton\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/Science_Exploration\/Space_Science\/XMM-Newton\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"> XMM-Newton<\/a> and<a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/Science_Exploration\/Space_Science\/XRISM_factsheet\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/Science_Exploration\/Space_Science\/XRISM_factsheet\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"> XRISM<\/a> X-ray space telescopes. Gu&#8217;s team used the two telescopes in tandem, tracking the initial flare with XMM-Newton&#8217;s Optical Monitor, and analyzing the resultant winds with XRISM&#8217;s Resolve instrument.
