The lavish event, which also championed the life and legacy of the late <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/nasa\" data-auto-tag-linker=\"true\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/nasa\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NASA<\/a> astronaut James Lovell, placed particular emphasis on the importance of innovation and sustainability in the future of space exploration.<\/p>\n<p>On Dec. 5, dozens of researchers, science communicators, celebrities and industry experts met at the Natural History Museum in London to wine, dine and strut the red carpet, all under the illuminated skeleton of a giant blue whale (Balaenoptera musculus) and the watchful gaze of a statue of Charles Darwin.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"458648a1-2976-4bde-80c9-36bfdea7d04e-2\">More than 40 finalists \u2014 who were recently <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=AlL9ie4vwRk\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=AlL9ie4vwRk\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">unveiled in a livestream<\/a> from a balloon hovering high up in Earth&#8217;s stratosphere \u2014 were vying for eight different awards, having been narrowed down from more than 500 entries from 38 countries.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p id=\"5b5e5b42-735a-4eb4-a604-6c04d5b0644c\">The award ceremony was hosted by theoretical physicist and science communicator <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.physics.columbia.edu\/content\/brian-greene\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.physics.columbia.edu\/content\/brian-greene\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Brian Greene<\/a>, a researcher of string theory at Columbia University, who was keen to help share what the space industry has to offer.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s really exciting to have awards that are focused on the final frontier,&#8221; Greene told Live Science at the event. &#8220;This [industry] is necessary for the future of humankind,&#8221; he added. &#8220;This is a wonderful ceremony to really put a spotlight on things that matter.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"vanilla-image-block\" style=\"padding-top:56.25%;\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/VDVoifeeKqnAxiGBcb6pcL.jpg\" alt=\"Photos of three people on the red carpet\"   loading=\"lazy\" data-new-v2-image=\"true\" data-original-mos=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/VDVoifeeKqnAxiGBcb6pcL.jpg\" data-pin-media=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/VDVoifeeKqnAxiGBcb6pcL.jpg\" class=\"inline\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<p>Scientists and celebs walked the red carpet before the awards, including Dame Maggie Aderin-Pocock (left), Beatriz Sanchez-Cano (center) and ESA astronaut Time Peake (right). (Image credit: Global Space Awards)<\/p>\n<p id=\"b686ff79-d66c-4a7e-811a-ac1099b6a707\">Other guests, including the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/european-space-agency\" data-auto-tag-linker=\"true\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/european-space-agency\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">European Space Agency<\/a> (ESA) astronaut Tim Peake \u2014 who spent around six months living on the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/international-space-station\" data-auto-tag-linker=\"true\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/international-space-station\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">International Space Station<\/a> in 2016 \u2014 highlighted the various ways that the space sector can benefit people on Earth, including developing pharmaceuticals, monitoring Earth\u2019s changing climate and building orbital data centers. &#8220;There&#8217;s so much happening in the space industry on a number of different levels, and it is playing such a huge part in everybody&#8217;s lives at the moment,&#8221; Peake told Live Science at the event.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, British science communicator <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/astronomy\/james-webb-space-telescope-is-science-and-magic-rolled-together-says-iconic-astronomer-maggie-aderin-pocock\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/astronomy\/james-webb-space-telescope-is-science-and-magic-rolled-together-says-iconic-astronomer-maggie-aderin-pocock\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dame Maggie Aderin-Pocock<\/a> was quick to point out that there is still more to be done to close the gap between space and the general public. &#8220;I think so many people aren&#8217;t aware of what we do in the space industry,&#8221; she told Live Science. &#8220;[It&#8217;s important] to encourage the next generation to come and join us.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">Get the world\u2019s most fascinating discoveries delivered straight to your inbox.<\/p>\n<p>Several scientists were up for awards, including <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/researchers.mq.edu.au\/en\/persons\/benjamin-pope\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/researchers.mq.edu.au\/en\/persons\/benjamin-pope\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Benjamin Pope<\/a> \u2014 an astronomer and data scientist at Macquarie University in Australia, who was shortlisted for the SuperScaler of the Year Award for his work <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/space-exploration\/we-sharpened-the-james-webb-telescopes-vision-from-a-million-miles-away-heres-how\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/space-exploration\/we-sharpened-the-james-webb-telescopes-vision-from-a-million-miles-away-heres-how\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">helping to improve the imaging capabilities<\/a> of the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/james-webb-space-telescope\" data-auto-tag-linker=\"true\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/james-webb-space-telescope\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">James Webb Space Telescope<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The winner of the Science Breakthrough Award was <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/le.ac.uk\/people\/beatriz-sanchez-cano\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/le.ac.uk\/people\/beatriz-sanchez-cano\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Beatriz S\u00e1nchez-Cano<\/a>, a planetary scientist at the University of Leicester, who is leading ESA&#8217;s proposed Mars Magnetosphere Atmosphere Ionosphere and Space-weather Science (M-MATISSE) mission. (Image credit: Global Space Awards)<\/p>\n<p id=\"dc284e80-bbe3-4e77-b982-a6da0cf796e9\">Another big winner was U.K.-based company <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.spaceforge.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.spaceforge.com\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Space Forge<\/a>, which took home the Sustainability for Earth Award for its work on creating semiconductors in space in order to help develop better ways of generating renewable energy.<\/p>\n<p>Sustainability was a key theme among multiple winners. <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/satelliteconfers.org\/page\/tahara-dawkins\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/satelliteconfers.org\/page\/tahara-dawkins\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Tahara Dawkins<\/a>, the director of Policy for U.S.-based satellite company <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/space-exploration\/japan-captures-1st-image-of-space-debris-from-orbit-and-its-spookily-stunning\" target=\"_blank\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/space-exploration\/japan-captures-1st-image-of-space-debris-from-orbit-and-its-spookily-stunning\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Astroscale<\/a> and an advocate for preserving low Earth orbit from <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/what-is-space-junk\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/what-is-space-junk\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">space junk<\/a>, took home the Playmaker of the Year Award. (Image credit: Global Space Awards)<\/p>\n<p id=\"087ac582-c1cc-47bf-953c-69e0d26c93cf\">Events like the Global Space Awards are a great way for different companies to come together and share ideas, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.axiomspace.com\/team\/jonathan-cirtain\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.axiomspace.com\/team\/jonathan-cirtain\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Jonathan Cirtain<\/a>, CEO of Axiom Space, told Live Science at the event. &#8220;Being here and being able to represent what we&#8217;re doing and collaborate with all the different leaders in the space economy is very important for us.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p id=\"8d0960f6-a5f0-4376-b5fe-dcf4d073227d\">However, the biggest cheer of the night went to the family of the late Apollo 13 astronaut James Lovell, who recently <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/space-exploration\/jim-lovell-commander-of-nasas-apollo-13-moon-mission-dies-at-97\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/space-exploration\/jim-lovell-commander-of-nasas-apollo-13-moon-mission-dies-at-97\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">died at age 97<\/a> in August.
