What kind of unity must we bear witness to? And how can we offer the world a credible form of communion that is not simply generic fraternity?<\/p>\n

These were the questions at the heart of the second of three Advent sermons delivered by Father Roberto Pasolini, preacher of the Papal Household, on Friday morning to Pope Leo XIV and the Roman Curia.<\/p>\n

The chosen theme for the three reflections was: \u201cAwaiting and hastening the coming of the day of God.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Tower of Babel <\/p>\n

Fr. Pasolini structured his reflection around three images: the Tower of Babel, Pentecost, and the reconstruction of the Temple of Jerusalem.<\/p>\n

The first image, the Tower of Babel, embodies a humanity which, after the flood, tries to exorcize \u201cthe fear of being scattered.\u201d But that project hides \u201ca deadly logic,\u201d because it pursues unity \u201cnot through the reconciliation of differences, but by means of uniformity.\u201d<\/p>\n

20th-century totalitarianism <\/p>\n

This is the \u201cdream of a world where no one is different, no one takes risks, everything is predictable,\u201d Fr. Pasolini observed, noting that the builders of the tower used not irregular stones but uniform bricks, all identical.<\/p>\n

The result is unanimity, he said, but one that is only apparent and illusory, because it is \u201cachieved at the price of eliminating individual voices.\u201d<\/p>\n

The preacher then turned to consider contemporary times, pointing to the totalitarian regimes of the 20th century, which imposed \u201ca single-minded ideology,\u201d silencing and persecuting dissent.<\/p>\n

Yet, \u201cwhenever unity is built by suppressing differences,\u201d he warned, \u201cthe result is not communion but death.\u201d<\/p>\n

Social media and AI <\/p>\n

Even today, Fr. Pasolini said, \u201cin the age of social media and artificial intelligence,\u201d the risks of homogenization have not disappeared\u2014indeed, they appear in new forms: algorithms that create \u201csingle-track information bubbles,\u201d predictable patterns reducing human complexity to standards, and platforms that chase instant consensus while penalizing \u201creflective dissent.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Church, the Capuchin friar added, is not immune to this temptation, since often in history the unity of faith has been mistaken for uniformity, to the detriment of \u201cthe slow rhythm of communion, which does not fear dialogue and does not erase nuances.\u201d<\/p>\n

Difference: the grammar of existence <\/p>\n

A world built on the utopia of identical copies, Fr. Pasolini continued, \u201cis the antithesis of creation,\u201d because \u201cGod creates by separating, distinguishing, differentiating\u201d: light from darkness, the waters from the dry land, and day from night.<\/p>\n

In this sense, \u201cdifference is the very grammar of existence,\u201d and rejecting it means reversing \u201cthe creative impulse\u201d in search of a false security that is in fact \u201ca refusal of freedom.\u201d<\/p>\n

The confusion of languages with which God responds to Babel, therefore, is not a punishment but \u201ca cure,\u201d the preacher emphasized. God \u201crestores dignity to particularity,\u201d giving humanity once more its \u201cmost precious gift\u201d: \u201cthe possibility of not all being the same.\u201d<\/p>\n

After all, \u201cthere is no communion without difference.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pentecost <\/p>\n

Fr. Pasolini\u2019s second image, Pentecost, thus becomes an emblem of communion without uniformity. The apostles speak in their own languages, and the listeners understand in theirs, because \u201cdiversity remains, but it does not divide.\u201d<\/p>\n

Differences are not eliminated to create unity; they are transformed \u201cinto the fabric of a broader communion.\u201d<\/p>\n

Renewal of the Church <\/p>\n

Fr. Pasolini then turned to discuss his third image: the Temple of Jerusalem, destroyed and rebuilt multiple times.<\/p>\n

Every reconstruction, he said, \u201ccan never be a linear process,\u201d for it is shaped by \u201centhusiasm and tears, new momentum and deep regrets.\u201d<\/p>\n

All this serves as \u201ca precious compendium\u201d for understanding \u201cthe perennial necessity of the Church\u2019s renewal,\u201d so well embodied by St. Francis of Assisi.<\/p>\n

The Church is called to allow herself to be rebuilt again and again, so that \u201cthe beauty of the Gospel\u201d may shine through, remaining faithful to itself while continuing \u201cto place herself at the service of the world.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Fr.
