{"id":185489,"date":"2025-12-15T08:37:09","date_gmt":"2025-12-15T08:37:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/185489\/"},"modified":"2025-12-15T08:37:09","modified_gmt":"2025-12-15T08:37:09","slug":"militant-groups-are-experimenting-with-ai-and-the-risks-are-expected-to-grow","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/185489\/","title":{"rendered":"Militant groups are experimenting with AI, and the risks are expected to grow"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao MvWXB TjIXL aGjvy ebVHC \">WASHINGTON &#8212; As the rest of the world rushes to harness the power of <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/artificial-intelligence\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">artificial intelligence<\/a>, militant groups also are experimenting with the technology, even if they aren&#8217;t sure exactly what to do with it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">For extremist organizations, <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-ai-regulation-executive-order-state-laws-9cb4dd1bc249e404260b3dc233217388\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AI could be a powerful tool<\/a> for recruiting new members, churning out realistic deepfake images and refining their cyberattacks, national security experts and spy agencies have warned.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Someone posting on a pro-Islamic State group website last month urged other IS supporters to make AI part of their operations. \u201cOne of the best things about AI is how easy it is to use,\u201d the user wrote in English.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">\u201cSome intelligence agencies worry that AI will contribute (to) recruiting,\u201d the user continued. \u201cSo make their nightmares into reality.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">IS, which had seized territory in Iraq and Syria years ago but is now a <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/new-orleans-crash-islamic-state-lone-wolves-4bb6446c484737fbe9dd1b9c26a899a9\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">decentralized alliance of militant groups<\/a> that share a violent ideology, realized years ago that social media could be a potent tool for recruitment and disinformation, so it&#8217;s not surprising that the group is testing out AI, national security experts say. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">For loose-knit, poorly resourced extremist groups \u2014 or even an individual bad actor with a web connection \u2014 AI can be used to pump out propaganda or <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/artificial-intelligence-deepfake-trump-espionage-hack-scammers-da90ad1e5298a9ce50c997458d6aa610\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">deepfakes at scale<\/a>, widening their reach and expanding their influence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">\u201cFor any adversary, AI really makes it much easier to do things,\u201d said John Laliberte, a former vulnerability researcher at the National Security Agency who is now CEO of cybersecurity firm ClearVector. \u201cWith AI, even a small group that doesn&#8217;t have a lot of money is still able to make an impact.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Militant groups began using AI as soon as programs like ChatGPT became widely accessible. In the years since, they have increasingly used generative AI programs to <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/walz-russia-disinformation-election-harris-trump-8646b7f354df629cd5d6661ba51e7174\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">create realistic-looking photos and video<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">When strapped to social media algorithms, this fake content can help recruit new believers, confuse or frighten enemies and spread propaganda at a scale unimaginable just a few years ago.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Such groups spread fake images two years ago of the Israel-Hamas war <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/artificial-intelligence-hamas-israel-misinformation-ai-gaza-a1bb303b637ffbbb9cbc3aa1e000db47\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">depicting bloodied, abandoned babies<\/a> in bombed-out buildings. The images spurred outrage and polarization while obscuring the war&#8217;s actual horrors. Violent groups in the Middle East used the photos to recruit new members, as did antisemitic hate groups in the U.S. and elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Something similar happened last year after an <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/russia-moscow-gunmen-concert-hall-injuries-fe7db5bb4ad4df17b6cbd04a3250faa1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">attack claimed by an IS affiliate<\/a> killed nearly 140 people at a concert venue in Russia. In the days after the shooting, AI-crafted propaganda videos circulated widely on discussion boards and social media, seeking new recruits.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">IS also has created deepfake audio recordings of its own leaders reciting scripture and used AI to quickly translate messages into multiple languages, according to researchers at SITE Intelligence Group, a firm that tracks extremist activities and has investigated IS&#8217; evolving use of AI.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Such groups lag behind China, Russia or Iran and still view the more sophisticated uses of AI as \u201caspirational,\u201d according to Marcus Fowler, a former CIA agent who is now CEO at Darktrace Federal, a cybersecurity firm that works with the federal government.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">But the risks are too high to ignore and are likely to grow as the use of cheap, powerful AI expands, he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Hackers are <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/north-korea-cyber-nuclear-russia-un-sanctions-28b6681541a62d809c52e0f2625febc9\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">already using synthetic audio and video for phishing campaigns<\/a>, in which they try to impersonate a senior business or government leader to gain access to sensitive networks. They also can use AI to write malicious code or automate some aspects of cyberattacks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">More concerning is the possibility that militant groups may try to use AI to help produce biological or chemical weapons, making up for a lack of technical expertise. That risk was included in the Department of Homeland Security&#8217;s updated Homeland Threat Assessment, <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dhs.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/2024-10\/24_0930_ia_24-320-ia-publication-2025-hta-final-30sep24-508.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">released earlier this year.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">\u201cISIS got on Twitter early and found ways to use social media to their advantage,\u201d Fowler said. \u201cThey are always looking for the next thing to add to their arsenal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Lawmakers have floated several proposals, saying there\u2019s an urgent need to act.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Sen. Mark Warner of Virginia, the top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, said, for instance, that the U.S. must make it easier for AI developers to share information about how their products are being used by bad actors, whether they are extremists, criminal hackers or foreign spies. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">\u201cIt has been obvious since late 2022, with the public release of ChatGPT, that the same fascination and experimentation with generative AI the public has had would also apply to a range of malign actors,\u201d Warner said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">During a recent hearing on extremist threats, House lawmakers learned that IS and al-Qaida have held training workshops to help supporters learn to use AI.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Legislation that passed the U.S. House last month would require homeland security officials to assess the AI risks posed by such groups each year. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Guarding against the malicious use of AI is no different from preparing for more conventional attacks, said Rep.
