{"id":188133,"date":"2025-12-16T20:27:08","date_gmt":"2025-12-16T20:27:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/188133\/"},"modified":"2025-12-16T20:27:08","modified_gmt":"2025-12-16T20:27:08","slug":"nasas-maven-spacecraft-is-still-silent-at-mars-and-apparently-is-spinning-too","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/188133\/","title":{"rendered":"NASA&#8217;s MAVEN spacecraft is still silent at Mars \u2014 and apparently is spinning, too"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"ec0a603d-e2cc-49e6-a48f-7cc4c653a00c\">Things aren&#8217;t looking good for one of NASA&#8217;s Mars orbiters.<\/p>\n<p><a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/23617-nasa-maven-mars-mission.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/23617-nasa-maven-mars-mission.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">MAVEN<\/a> (short for &#8220;Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution&#8221;) has been <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/nasas-loses-contact-with-maven-mars-orbiter-on-the-far-side-of-the-red-planet\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/nasas-loses-contact-with-maven-mars-orbiter-on-the-far-side-of-the-red-planet\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">silent since Dec. 4<\/a>, despite repeated efforts to hail the spacecraft, NASA announced in an update on Monday (Dec. 15). And a fragment of tracking data recovered on Dec. 6 delivered a bit of additional bad news.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"ec0a603d-e2cc-49e6-a48f-7cc4c653a00c-2\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">&#8220;Analysis of that signal suggests that the MAVEN spacecraft was rotating in an unexpected manner when it emerged from behind <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/47-mars-the-red-planet-fourth-planet-from-the-sun.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/47-mars-the-red-planet-fourth-planet-from-the-sun.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mars<\/a>,&#8221; NASA officials wrote in <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/blogs\/maven\/2025\/12\/15\/nasa-continues-maven-spacecraft-recontact-efforts\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/blogs\/maven\/2025\/12\/15\/nasa-continues-maven-spacecraft-recontact-efforts\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">the update<\/a>. &#8220;Further, the frequency of the tracking signal suggests MAVEN&#8217;s orbit trajectory may have changed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p id=\"c98590c4-c8f3-4960-93f7-a5162a19633c\">MAVEN launched in November 2013 and arrived in Mars orbit 10 months later, tasked with studying <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16903-mars-atmosphere-climate-weather.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16903-mars-atmosphere-climate-weather.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mars&#8217; atmosphere<\/a> and how it interacts with the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22215-solar-wind.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22215-solar-wind.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">solar wind<\/a>, the stream of charged particles flowing from <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/58-the-sun-formation-facts-and-characteristics.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/58-the-sun-formation-facts-and-characteristics.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the sun<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>MAVEN&#8217;s prime mission lasted one Earth year, and the spacecraft delivered in that time. Its data helped scientists understand how (and when) the Red Planet <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/31031-mars-atmosphere-discovery-nasa-maven.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/31031-mars-atmosphere-discovery-nasa-maven.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">lost its once-thick atmosphere<\/a>, which allowed liquid water to flow on Mars billions of years ago.<\/p>\n<p>The orbiter just kept going after that, gathering loads of information about the Red Planet \u2014 for example, its dust storms, winds and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/mars-maven-two-aurora-types-simultaneously\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/mars-maven-two-aurora-types-simultaneously\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">auroras<\/a>, for example.<\/p>\n<p id=\"739028b6-2a95-4722-8e57-a80b0c7ebfe6\">MAVEN also serves as a communications link between mission control and NASA robots on the Martian surface \u2014 at the moment, the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17963-mars-curiosity.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17963-mars-curiosity.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Curiosity<\/a> and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/perseverance-rover-mars-2020-mission\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/perseverance-rover-mars-2020-mission\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Perseverance<\/a> rovers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">Breaking space news, the latest updates on rocket launches, skywatching events and more!<\/p>\n<p>But MAVEN isn&#8217;t the only orbiter that plays this relay role; NASA&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18320-mars-reconnaissance-orbiter.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18320-mars-reconnaissance-orbiter.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter<\/a> and Mars Odyssey do as well, along with the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22562-european-space-agency.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22562-european-space-agency.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">European Space Agency<\/a>&#8216;s Mars Express probe and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/34664-exomars-facts.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/34664-exomars-facts.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ExoMars<\/a> Trace Gas Orbiter.
