(Image credit: JAXA)<\/p>\n<p id=\"6be4e409-a5bd-47b4-a96c-a9e3cf24a174\">The 10,580-pound (4,800-kilogram) Michibiki 5 will be part of the Quasi-Zenith Satellite System (QZSS), Japan&#8217;s homegrown navigation network in geosynchronous orbit.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"6be4e409-a5bd-47b4-a96c-a9e3cf24a174-1\">&#8220;This system is compatible with <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/gps-what-is-it\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/gps-what-is-it\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">GPS satellites<\/a> and can be utilized with them in an integrated fashion,&#8221; Japanese officials wrote in a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/qzss.go.jp\/en\/overview\/services\/sv02_why.html\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/qzss.go.jp\/en\/overview\/services\/sv02_why.html\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">description of the QZSS project<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;QZSW can be used even in the Asia-Oceania regions with longitudes close to Japan, so its usage will be expanded to other countries in these regions as well,&#8221; they added.<\/p>\n<p>Five QZSS satellites have reached orbit to date, starting with a pathfinder that launched in September 2010. That spacecraft, called Michibiki 1, was replaced by Michibiki 1R, which flew in October 2021.<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">Breaking space news, the latest updates on rocket launches, skywatching events and more!<\/p>\n<p>Michibiki 5 will make QZSS a five-satellite system. But the launches won&#8217;t end there: The constellation will eventually <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gpsworld.com\/the-status-of-qzss\/#:~:text=On%20June%2012%2C%202024%2C%20the%20National%20Space,2030s.%20Figure%201%20System%20expansion%20of%20QZSS.\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.gpsworld.com\/the-status-of-qzss\/#:~:text=On%20June%2012%2C%202024%2C%20the%20National%20Space,2030s.%20Figure%201%20System%20expansion%20of%20QZSS.\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">consist of 11 spacecraft<\/a>, if all goes to plan.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ee4195c7-eb53-45b2-b79d-302a4a6032b5\">Tonight&#8217;s launch will be the seventh to date for the two-stage H3, the successor to Japan&#8217;s workhorse H-2A, which <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/japan-launching-of-gosat-gw-on-50th-and-final-liftoff-of-the-h-2a-rocket\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/japan-launching-of-gosat-gw-on-50th-and-final-liftoff-of-the-h-2a-rocket\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">retired this past June<\/a> after 24 years of service.<\/p>\n<p>The H3 failed during its debut launch in March 2023, resulting in the loss of the ALOS-3 Earth-observing satellite.
