{"id":189049,"date":"2025-12-17T09:11:10","date_gmt":"2025-12-17T09:11:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/189049\/"},"modified":"2025-12-17T09:11:10","modified_gmt":"2025-12-17T09:11:10","slug":"whos-afraid-of-ai-politico","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/189049\/","title":{"rendered":"Who\u2019s afraid of AI? \u2013 POLITICO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Then there\u2019s Silicon Valley, which itself has a culture\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0out of step with much of the American and European populace \u2014 and\u00a0that\u00a0has shaped\u00a0the rest of America\u2019s posture on tech.\u00a0That culture has\u00a0long been guided by a libertarian ethos\u00a0and\u00a0unwavering\u00a0faith in technological advancement, not the forces that might inhibit it.\u00a0\u201cDespite the central role played by public intervention in developing hypermedia, the Californian ideologues preach an anti-statist gospel of hi-tech libertarianism: a bizarre mishmash of hippie anarchism and economic liberalism beefed up with lots of technological determinism,\u201d\u00a0two media theorists wrote in a\u00a0seminal essay,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/monoskop.org\/images\/d\/dc\/Barbrook_Richard_Cameron_Andy_1996_The_Californian_Ideology.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">The Californian Ideology<\/a>,\u00a0for\u00a0Whole Earth Catalog\u00a0in the mid-90s.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>One of the most popular concepts flowing through Bay Area circles today is the idea of accelerationism. This philosophy includes different strains of thought: all the way from believing (and hoping) that unregulated AI development will lead to a techno-utopia where the machines solve disease to believing (and hoping) that AI will destroy democracy and usher in a world where a vanishingly small number of tech overlords rule the world.\u00a0These\u00a0different outlooks\u00a0contributed to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.brookings.edu\/articles\/the-eu-and-us-diverge-on-ai-regulation-a-transatlantic-comparison-and-steps-to-alignment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">vastly different regulatory cultures<\/a>\u00a0around technology\u00a0in the U.S. and EU through the\u00a020th\u00a0and\u00a021st\u00a0centuries.\u00a0The EU\u2019s General Data Protection Regulation, a comprehensive privacy law implemented in 2018,\u00a0enshrines a right to privacy that\u00a0doesn\u2019t\u00a0exist in the U.S. \u2014 and restricts tech companies\u2019 ability to\u00a0collect data and monetize\u00a0it, which has had massive ramifications for tech companies\u2019 ability to grow\u00a0in Europe.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of hubris, a lot of arrogance, and [Europe] really has this mindset that they need to be the world\u2019s regulator, but they do it before the technology is actually developed,\u201d said Michael Jackson, an American tech investor who lives and works in Paris.\u00a0That\u2019s\u00a0compared to the U.S., where according to him, the government steps in with more targeted regulation once it understands the needs of the marketplace.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1021\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/ONLINE01_AI-FF_02-copy.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7659306\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>AI threw these\u00a0differences\u00a0into starker relief than ever.\u00a0AI\u00a0presented greater challenges to privacy and\u00a0more opportunities for\u00a0surveillance, and\u00a0the consequences are harder to predict than almost any other innovation that had come before it,\u00a0with the possible exception of\u00a0the internet itself \u2014 a nightmare for the risk-averse.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Europe has taken\u00a0a\u00a0notably more muscular regulatory approach. The Artificial Intelligence Act \u2014 which entered into force in the EU on August\u00a01st, 2024, is Europe\u2019s most comprehensive attempt at reining in AI companies\u00a0that\u00a0are\u00a0not acting in the best interest of the public.\u00a0Largely, the\u00a0legislation is about harm reduction. It creates categories of risk for AI applications \u2014 from \u201cminimal\u201d to \u201cunacceptable\u201d risk (the latter applications are banned) \u2014 and forces most AI companies to be more transparent about how they work.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, after some halting efforts to regulate AI during the Joe Biden administration, the U.S. under President Donald Trump has thrown regulation to the side. In July, the Trump administration released the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Americas-AI-Action-Plan.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">AI Action Plan, a series of policy preferences that<\/a>\u00a0pledged to \u201cremove red tape and onerous regulation\u201d\u00a0of\u00a0AI\u00a0development.\u00a0As the EU regulates more, America is doing so less.
