Vanity Fair photographer Christopher Anderson<\/a> has defended his close-up photographs of President Donald Trump\u2019s Cabinet, particularly the portrait of White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt. <\/p>\n

The images have caused a stir online. Some called out Anderson for intentionally trying to make the staff look ugly, while comments on the Vanity Fair Instagram page \u2014 where the photos have been shared \u2014 range from \u201cjump scare,\u201d \u201cdiabolical,\u201d \u201ccrazy,\u201d and \u201cdone dirty.\u201d <\/p>\n

Anderson took extremely tight head shots of many of Trump\u2019s inner circle, including Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles. Some of them came with accompanying juxtaposed blurbs, such as \u201cThe Mouthpiece\u201d for Leavitt. <\/p>\n

The photographs are certainly unflinching. Many people have pointed out the filler injection sites on Leavitt\u2019s lips; perhaps a more sympathetic eye may have airbrushed the photo. However, Anderson is well-known for this style of work. <\/p>\n

\u201cVery close-up portraiture has been a fixture in a lot of my work over the years,\u201d Anderson tells The Independent.<\/a> \u201cParticularly, political portraits that I\u2019ve done over the years. I like the idea of penetrating the theater of politics.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI know there\u2019s a lot to be made with, \u2018Oh, he intentionally is trying to make people look bad\u2019 and that kind of thing \u2013 that\u2019s not the case,\u201d Anderson adds. \u201cIf you look at my photograph work, I\u2019ve done a lot of close-ups in the same style with people of all political stripes.\u201d<\/p>\n

In an Instagram Reel by V Spehar<\/a> that was co-authored by Anderson, Spehar says it is the photographer\u2019s signature style. <\/p>\n

\u201cChristopher Anderson quite simply captures the deepest truth of people, which is what makes him such an incredible and respected artist as a photographer,\u201d they say. <\/p>\n

Anderson didn\u2019t just take up-close photos of Trump\u2019s team; he captured more regular group portraits, details, and wider shots \u2014 including a bizarre photo of Rubio looking at a lamp. <\/p>\n

In the Vanity Fair article<\/a>, it\u2019s revealed that Vance joked to Anderson: \u201cI\u2019ll give you $100 for every person you make look really s****y compared to me. And $1,000 if it\u2019s Marco.\u201d <\/p>\n

When Anderson started shooting, the wisecracking vice president asked the photographer, \u201cIs this the part where you say we\u2019re all evil?\u201d<\/p>\n

There has also been significant fallout from the contents within the article: Wiles describes the president as having \u201can alcoholic\u2019s personality,\u201d accuses former head of DOGE Elon Musk of being an \u201cavowed ketamine\u201d user, and calls Vance a \u201cconspiracy theorist.\u201d <\/p>\n
