\n\tLabubu<\/a>, that line of round, wide eyed, pointy eared plush collectibles, is coming to the screen. Sony Pictures has tapped Paul King<\/a>, the director of \u201cWonka\u201d and the \u201cPaddington\u201d films,\u201d to make a live-action feature based on the beloved toys. The project is in early development, with King set to direct and produce with Department M and Wenxin She.<\/p>\n

\n\tKing\u2019s most recent film, \u201cWonka,\u201d starring Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet, was a major box office success, earning $635 million globally. The \u201cPaddington\u201d films were commercial hits and were embraced by critics. They earned nearly $500 million globally. King co-wrote the screenplay and executive produced the third film in the series.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cLabubu\u201d originated 10 years ago in a picture book series. The toys are produced and sold exclusively by China-based retailer\u00a0Pop Mart. In case you came of age long before the aughts or don\u2019t have young relatives, Labubu figures are sealed\u00a0in \u201cblind box\u201d packaging, which means buyers aren\u2019t always aware of the specific character inside. They were created by Kasing Lung, a Hong Kong-born artist who has strong ties to the Netherlands, where he moved as a child, developing an appreciation for folklore that inspired \u201cThe Monsters\u201d series, which led to Labubu.<\/p>\n

\n\tAs Hollywood hunts for new forms of IP to exploit, it has increasingly turned to toys and games. Warner Bros. and Mattel had a hit with \u201cBarbie\u201d and Warners then turned \u201cA Minecraft Movie\u201d into one of 2025\u2019s biggest blockbusters. There have also been successful movies made of \u201cSuper Mario Bros.\u201d and \u201cSonic the Hedgehog.\u201d Studios are currently working on producing features based on everything from \u201cMasters of the Universe\u201d to \u201cRock \u2019Em Sock \u2019Em Robots,\u201d which is being written by Vin Diesel. <\/p>\n
