One of\u00a0New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani<\/a>\u00a0\u2019s appointees has resigned over social media posts she made more than a decade ago that featured antisemitic tropes, Mamdani\u2019s office said Thursday.<\/p>\n

In a statement, Catherine Almonte Da Costa, who was tapped this week to join the incoming administration, said she expressed \u201cdeep regret\u201d for the posts, which date back to 2011 and 2012 and were recently shared online by the Anti-Defamation League.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese statements are not indicative of who I am. As the mother of Jewish children, I feel a profound sense of sadness and remorse at the harm these words have caused,\u201d Da Costa said.<\/p>\n

She had been selected to lead Mamdani\u2019s office of appointments, handling \u201ctalent recruitment strategy.\u201d Da Costa worked in the office more than a decade ago and more recently held roles at a private communications firm and at Sotheby\u2019s, the mayor-elect\u2019s office said.<\/p>\n

Mamdani has accepted her resignation, his spokesperson confirmed.<\/p>\n

\u201cCatherine expressed her deep remorse over her past statements and tendered her resignation, and I accepted,\u201d Mamdani said.<\/p>\n

The Anti-Defamation League declined to comment after Da Costa\u2019s resignation. The prominent Jewish advocacy organization had shared three tweets from Da Costa that it said \u201cecho classic antisemitic tropes and otherwise demean Jewish people.\u201d<\/p>\n

Following Mamdani\u2019s election in November, the group\u00a0announced<\/a>\u00a0a new tool \u201cto track and monitor policies and personnel\u201d hired by Mamdani, who has been heavily critical of Israel.<\/p>\n

Mamdani, who takes office next month, has been under intense pressure to show that his opposition of Israel\u2019s military actions in Gaza do not amount to antisemitism. During his campaign, Mamdani drew criticism for refusing to condemn the phrase \u201cglobalize the intifada,\u201d though he has more recently said he discourages people from using it.<\/p>\n
