{"id":194762,"date":"2025-12-20T11:58:15","date_gmt":"2025-12-20T11:58:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/194762\/"},"modified":"2025-12-20T11:58:15","modified_gmt":"2025-12-20T11:58:15","slug":"how-excessive-phone-use-can-hinder-student-success","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/194762\/","title":{"rendered":"How Excessive Phone Use Can Hinder Student Success"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Many of today\u2019s college students are digital natives, having grown up in a world dominated by cellphones, the internet, social media and rapid technological advancements.<\/p>\n<p>Coming of age alongside smartphones, however, has been <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC10406047\/\" target=\"_blank\">linked to high rates of mental health concerns<\/a> among Gen Z. A <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/products\/databriefs\/db513.htm\" target=\"_blank\">2024 brief by the National Center for Health Statistics<\/a> found that half of teenagers between the ages of 12 and 17 spent four or more hours on screens per day, and those teens were more likely to experience anxiety or depression symptoms. In 2025, 32\u00a0percent of college students reported moderate or severe levels of anxiety and 37\u00a0percent said they experience moderate or severe depression,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/news\/student-success\/health-wellness\/2025\/09\/11\/college-student-mental-health-remains-poor-minority\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> according to the Healthy Minds Study<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, more primary and secondary schools are introducing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/map-shows-us-states-school-phone-bans-2090411\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">phone-free policies<\/a> to improve children\u2019s interpersonal skills and mitigate the harms of social media on their developing brains.<\/p>\n<p>At some colleges and universities, students, faculty and administrators have identified opportunities to encourage healthy device habits and promote student success.<\/p>\n<p>By the numbers: Students, in large part, are aware of their heavy device use and its potential link to poor academic outcomes.<\/p>\n<p>A fall 2025 survey by <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/echeloninsights.com\/touch-grass-undergraduate-student-health\/\" target=\"_blank\">Echelon Insights<\/a> found that 54\u00a0percent of U.S. students say they spend five hours or more on recreational screen time, including scrolling social media, streaming or gaming. Of those students, 18\u00a0percent say they spend over six hours on their devices doing non\u2013coursework-related tasks.<\/p>\n<p>Another <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fluidfocus.app\/sie-research\" target=\"_blank\">2025 study of smartphone use<\/a> surveyed students in the U.K. and found that among young adults aged 18 to 22, 73\u00a0percent spend more than four hours on their phone each day. Over three in four students also believe their smartphone negatively impacts their academic performance.<\/p>\n<p>Finding ways to unplug, however, is difficult.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/scholarworks.sjsu.edu\/cgi\/viewcontent.cgi?article=9187&amp;context=etd_theses\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">One research study from San Jose State University<\/a> found that students who logged daily social media use reported a slight decrease in overall screen time over the course of a month, but simply monitoring screen time didn\u2019t change the students\u2019 high internet use. <a href=\"https:\/\/news.northeastern.edu\/2025\/05\/01\/social-media-break-mental-health-study\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">A Northwestern study<\/a> of Americans who deactivated their Facebook account found leaving the platform did improve their mental health, but many just spent their time on other platforms rather than go offline entirely.<\/p>\n<p>DIY: A 2023 <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/getrocketbook.com\/blogs\/news\/a-deep-dive-into-the-digital-dilemma-how-technology-is-taking-a-toll-on-today-s-college-students\" target=\"_blank\">survey<\/a> of college students found that over 80\u00a0percent of respondents believe colleges and universities should do more to support breaks from technology. For practitioners looking to support students who are glued to their phones, other institutions and experts offer interventions that can encourage them to disconnect from devices.<\/p>\n<p>Encourage sleep. Excessive screen time is linked to poor health outcomes; it has been shown to disrupt<a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/news\/student-success\/health-wellness\/2023\/08\/17\/six-ways-help-college-students-prioritize-sleep\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> students\u2019 sleep and energy levels<\/a> as well as their emotional health and cognition. First-year seminar instructors at the New York Film Academy require incoming students to complete a sleep log. Students track how many hours they sleep in a week, and the log provides a space for reflection and links healthy habits to academic and personal performance.Provide tech breaks. Fluid Focus\u2019s survey of U.K. students found that 67\u00a0percent of students struggle to disconnect while they\u2019re at home studying; an additional 16 percent said they have trouble disconnecting \u201cduring class.\u201d Faculty and staff can help make it possible by assigning classroom activities that don\u2019t require a device or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/news\/student-success\/health-wellness\/2023\/09\/07\/support-college-student-tech-breaks-class-and\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">creating phone-free class sessions<\/a>.Establish phone-free environments. New York University\u2019s president <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nyu.edu\/about\/leadership-university-administration\/office-of-the-president\/comms\/welcome-to-a-new-academic-year.html?challenge=d06e90d7-4d8f-4b88-9d8c-10b73beb60f1\" target=\"_blank\">announced this fall<\/a> that the university would implement device-free spaces, classes and events at campuses in New York, Shanghai and Abu Dhabi. Wyoming Catholic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/news\/tech-innovation\/2023\/07\/07\/colleges-offer-digital-detox-experiences-without-phones\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">bans phones outright on campus<\/a>; it also limits students\u2019 internet access in the dorms to college emails and selected websites for class. Students leave their phones at the student life center and can check them out before they leave town.Support student leadership. The fear of missing out can also hinder students from spending less time on their smartphones, according to U.K. survey respondents. Some <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gainesville.com\/story\/news\/2025\/06\/09\/college-kids-are-throwing-away-their-smartphones-heres-why-university-of-florida\/84114154007\/\" target=\"_blank\">colleges and universities<\/a> house <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/09\/29\/well\/mind\/phone-screen-social-media-college-club-reconnect.html\" target=\"_blank\">student clubs<\/a> that promote device-free engagement.Provide incentives. <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S016726812500201X?via%3Dihub\" target=\"_blank\">Researchers<\/a> from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, the University of Pittsburgh and the University of Texas at Austin evaluated how an app that rewards students for staying off their phone during class could change behaviors.
