{"id":196430,"date":"2025-12-21T12:50:07","date_gmt":"2025-12-21T12:50:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/196430\/"},"modified":"2025-12-21T12:50:07","modified_gmt":"2025-12-21T12:50:07","slug":"israel-approves-new-settlements-in-occupied-west-bank-dw-12-21-2025","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/196430\/","title":{"rendered":"Israel approves new settlements in occupied West Bank \u2013 DW \u2013 12\/21\/2025"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/israel\/t-19067044\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Israeli<\/a>\u00a0Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich said on Sunday that\u00a0the Israeli Cabinet had\u00a0approved the establishment of 19 new settlements in the <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/occupied-west-bank\/t-38397942\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">occupied West Bank<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As part of his official role in the Ministry of Defense, Smotrich overseas the Administration for Settlement Affairs, a government entity established in 2023 to manage civilian matters in the West Bank&#8217;s settlements, including approving construction requests.<\/p>\n<p>What do we know about the new Israeli settlements?<\/p>\n<p>The list of approvals\u00a0includes two West Bank villages\u00a0evacuated by Israel as part of the 2005 Israeli disengagement from the <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/gaza-strip\/t-19074241\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gaza Strip<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Left-wing Israeli watchdog Peace Now said the newly approved settlements also include areas where Israel had not previously had a presence, while others are to be built in densely populated Palestinian areas, as well as sites where Palestinian communities have been expelled.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We will continue to develop, build, and settle the land of our ancestral heritage, with faith in the justice of our path,&#8221; Smotrich posted on his X account.<\/p>\n<p>According to Smotrich, the Israeli government is &#8220;stopping the establishment&#8221; of a Palestinian state, which he labels a &#8220;terror state,&#8221; through creating facts on the ground.<\/p>\n<p>Growing settlements under far-right government<\/p>\n<p>The current Israeli government is\u00a0considered the <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/israel-netanyahu-sworn-in-as-leader-of-far-right-government\/a-64234438\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">country&#8217;s most far-right government to date<\/a>. Bezalel Smotrich is seen as one of its most prominent members.<\/p>\n<p><img data-format=\"MASTER_LANDSCAPE\" data-id=\"73638860\" data-url=\"https:\/\/static.dw.com\/image\/73638860_${formatId}.jpg\" data-aspect-ratio=\"16\/9\" alt=\" Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich gestures on August 14, 2025\" style=\"padding-bottom: 56.25%; height: 0; max-height: 0;\"\/>Bezalel Smotrich is a staunch supporter of Israeli settlementsImage: Ronen Zvulun\/REUTERS<\/p>\n<p>Smotrich\u00a0is one of the most staunch supporters of the country&#8217;s settlements in the occupied West Bank, which are considered illegal according to international law.<\/p>\n<p>The Israeli finance minister has also been vocal in his support for annexing the West Bank, a widely-rejected notion, including by Israel&#8217;s strongest allies.<\/p>\n<p>The Israeli establishment\u00a0of settlements is often condemned internationally, with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres saying earlier this month that such moves continue\u00a0&#8220;to fuel tensions, impede access by Palestinians to their land and threaten the viability of a fully independent, democratic, contiguous and <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/palestinian-territories\/t-19099064\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sovereign Palestinian State.<\/a>&#8220;<\/p>\n<p>The UN has said that the expansion of Israeli settlements in the West Bank has reached its highest level since at least 2017.<\/p>\n<p>Peace Now says the number of settlements \u2014 often called &#8220;formalization&#8221; by the Israeli government due to the legalization of outposts that had originally been established illegally \u2014\u00a0 increased by nearly 50% under the current government, from 141 in 2022 to 210 in 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Palestinians squeezed as Israel&#8217;s West Bank settlements grow<\/p>\n<p class=\"vjs-no-js\">To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that <a href=\"https:\/\/videojs.com\/html5-video-support\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">supports HTML5 video<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Addressing the settlements, UN chief Guterres said in the recent UN report:\u00a0&#8220;These developments are further entrenching the unlawful Israeli occupation and violating international law and undermining the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Israel has occupied the West Bank since 1967, with settler violence in the Palestinian territory flaring since the Gaza war erupted in October 2023 following the Hamas attack on Israel.<\/p>\n<p>Over 1,000 Palestinians were killed in the West Bank by Israeli troops or settlers in the past two years, including militants as well as civilians, as per a tally by the French AFP news agency.
