The Holiday actor, 50, said she was followed by paparazzi<\/a>, had her phone tapped and that people searched through her bins to \u201ctry and figure out what diet I was on or wasn’t on\u201d. <\/p>\n “It was horrific. There were people tapping my phone. They were just everywhere. And I was just on my own. I was terrified to go to sleep,” she told BBC Radio 4\u2019s Desert Island Discs. <\/p>\n Winslet, who has just released her directorial debut Goodbye June<\/a>, said that after Titanic was released, she saw herself on the cover of newspapers and magazines, often accompanied by what she described as \u201cawful, terrible, actually abusive names\u201d.<\/p>\n She said she dealt with media attention with \u201ca good meal, a shared conversation, a nice cup of coffee, a bit of Radiohead and a good poo\u201d.<\/p>\n \u201cYou know, life\u2019s all the better for those things,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n She experienced further intrusion years later during her divorce from her second husband, film director Sam Mendes, in 2010.<\/p>\n \u201cI was being followed by paparazzi in New York City with my two small kids, who wanted to, of course, know the reason why Sam and I had split up,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n open image in gallery<\/p>\n Kate Winslet said her phone was tapped during the height of her rise to fame (Gareth Cattermole\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n On how she managed that period, she said: \u201cYou just keep your mouth closed, you put your head down, and you keep walking. And you try and put your hands over your children\u2019s ears. You lean on your friends, you just keep going.\u201d<\/p>\n Winslet credited her friends for their support, especially a neighbouring couple who would leave her a \u201cbowl of steaming pasta and a little glass of red wine\u201d on the garden wall between their homes.<\/p>\n While filming Titanic in her early twenties, Winslet said she experienced difficulty with her body image, and wasn\u2019t prepared for her body to be in the public eye.<\/p>\n open image in gallery<\/p>\n Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet in James Cameron\u2019s \u2018Titanic\u2019 (\u00a9Paramount All Rights Reserved)<\/p>\n \u201cI wasn’t ready for that world,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n She recalled the negative comments she received from a drama teacher who told her she would have to \u201csettle for the fat girl parts\u201d, and shared that she was nicknamed \u201cblubber\u201d at primary school as a child. <\/p>\n From the ages of 15 to 19, she said she was \u201con and off\u201d dieting, \u201cbarely eating\u201d. \u201cIt was really unhealthy,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n Reflecting on her depiction in the media after the release of Titanic, Winslet described how magazine cover images of her were edited without her knowledge, which she spoke about earlier in the 2000s.<\/p>\n Winslet recalled seeing the edited images and thinking: \u201cI don’t look like this. My stomach isn’t flat like that. My legs are not that long, my boobs are not that big. What? My arms aren’t that toned.
