Tech giant Google has reportedly laid off more than 200 contractors working on its artificial intelligence projects, including Gemini and AI Overviews, sparking concerns over job security, low pay, and retaliation against unionisation efforts.<\/p>\n

More than 200 workers hired to train and refine Google\u2019s AI systems were abruptly terminated last month, according to multiple sources who spoke to WIRED.<\/p>\n

Many of them hold advanced degrees, including master\u2019s and PhDs, and come from diverse fields such as education, writing, and the arts.<\/p>\n Their work was critical to shaping the performance of Google\u2019s AI products<\/a>, including the AI Overviews feature, which summarises search results using generative AI.<\/p>\n \u201cWe as raters play an incredibly vital role,\u201d said Alex, a generalist rater employed by GlobalLogic. \u201cThe engineers between messing with the code and everything, they’re not going to have the time to fine tune and get the feedback they need for the bot. Several employees claim they faced direct retaliation for organising, with two filing complaints with the US National Labor Relations Board (NLRB).<\/a><\/p>\n One contractor told WIRED they were dismissed after raising concerns about wage transparency, while another claimed they were terminated for advocating for colleagues.<\/p>\n Ricardo Levario, a teacher from Texas and one of the first super raters hired, helped spearhead union efforts after witnessing stark pay disparities. But soon after, tensions escalated.
