{"id":197034,"date":"2025-12-21T21:14:07","date_gmt":"2025-12-21T21:14:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/197034\/"},"modified":"2025-12-21T21:14:07","modified_gmt":"2025-12-21T21:14:07","slug":"two-palestine-action-linked-hunger-strikers-taken-to-hospital-uk-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/197034\/","title":{"rendered":"Two Palestine Action-linked hunger strikers taken to hospital | UK news"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Two Palestine Action-affiliated prisoners taking part in a hunger strike have been taken to hospital, as their next of kin and MPs expressed concern over prison conditions and called for immediate government intervention.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2025\/dec\/19\/hunger-strike-british-prison-arms-to-israel\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Amu Gib<\/a>, 30, who was being held at HMP Bronzefield in Surrey while awaiting trial, is on day 50 of the hunger strike and 28-year-old Kamran Ahmed was being held at Pentonville prison in London and on day 42 of his hunger strike. The two are the latest of eight prisoners who have been admitted to hospital since the hunger strike action began on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2017\/nov\/01\/arthur-balfour-declaration-100-years-of-suffering-britain-palestine-israel\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Balfour day, 2 November<\/a>, according to Prisoners for Palestine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Gib was provided with a wheelchair on Friday and taken to hospital on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The prisoner-led collective in Britain said hunger strikers \u201cwill die\u201d unless there is urgent government intervention. \u201cThey are in the custody of the state and any harm that comes to them is a deliberate outcome of the government\u2019s negligence and the politicisation of their detention,\u201d the collective said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">MPs have written to the government expressing concerns over the delay in medical assistance and limited communication with families. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk-news\/2025\/dec\/16\/palestine-action-hunger-strikers-may-die-without-lammy-intervention-lawyers-say\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lawyers representing prisoners have also criticised<\/a> the justice secretary, David Lammy, for refusing to meet them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">A friend of Gib\u2019s and next of kin, Jessica Dolliver, was due to visit Gib in prison on Sunday morning, when a call came from the prison.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cI just wasn\u2019t surprised because I could see that Amu was deteriorating and I could also hear on the phone,\u201d said Dolliver, 28.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">On Friday Gib <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2025\/dec\/19\/hunger-strike-british-prison-arms-to-israel\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">wrote in the Guardian<\/a> of his solidarity with Palestinians.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">It is understood Gib is on remand on suspicion of being involved in the break-in at Brize Norton airbase in June, when two military aircraft were defaced with spray paint.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Gib is one of three prisoners at the prison, along with Qesser Zuhrah, who has been admitted to hospital, and Jon Cink.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">A HMP Bronzefield spokesperson said: \u201cWe cannot provide information about specific individuals however, we can confirm that all prisoners have full access to healthcare, including attendance at external medical facilities if needed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cAny prisoner refusing food receives regular medical assessment and support from clinicians, as well as being offered mental health support.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, who is Gib\u2019s MP and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DSFW3oOjPtK\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">has visited the 30-year-old in detention<\/a>, on Sunday wrote a letter to the prisons inspectorate raising concerns over \u201cinconsistent and unreliable\u201d health treatment to those on hunger strike.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The letter was also signed by MPs John McDonnell and Barry Gardiner.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWe are dismayed to learn that, as they near their eighth week on hunger strike, their treatment remains inconsistent and unreliable,\u201d the letter says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Last week, Corbyn and more than 50 MPs urged Lammy to meet the lawyers of those on hunger strike.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cOur inquiries have either gone unanswered or, when answered have been vague reassurances that all policies and guidelines are being followed.
