Alanis Morissette isn\u2019t particularly concerned about the fact that plenty of people have a problem with the lyrics in her 1995 hit \u201cIronic,\u201d which describe several scenarios \u2013 none of which is a pure example of irony. <\/p>\n

In the December 21 episode of MGM\u2019s \u201cWords + Music,\u201d she says of the criticism, \u201cI don\u2019t care.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople got really triggered by the malapropism, or whatever the word,\u201d she explained of the mild uproar in the \u201990s. \u201cI am a linguist. I\u2019m obsessed with linguistics. I also love making up words, and I also don\u2019t care.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhere I go when people are triggered by anything is I quickly go to what\u2019s at the epicenter of this \u2014 what is, what is everyone really up in arms about?\u201d Morissette continued. \u201cWhy is everyone laughing? And I think we\u2019re afraid to look stupid. So I think because who is a linguist and then misuses a word, you know, \u2018What kind of person does that?\u2019 is where I go.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut I wasn\u2019t being precious about it,\u201d she added. \u201cAnd I think a lot of lyrics around the planet, many, many artists, most of us aren\u2019t being wildly precious about it. So I\u2019m 90% grammar police, which is the real irony. And then 10% I really couldn\u2019t care less. So I think the 10% won over on that song.\u201d<\/p>\n

Morissette also noted that she didn\u2019t ever actually expect to release the song. <\/p>\n

\u201cWhen Glen [Ballard] and I wrote \u2018Ironic,\u2019 this was the first of the songs written for the whole record,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd I wasn\u2019t writing wildly autobiographically quite yet, more sort of storytelling, getting to know Glen. And at one point, I didn\u2019t want the song in the record, because I thought that it was sort of, for lack of a better term, our warm up, you know. But I love the song.\u201d<\/p>\n

At the time of its release, many people pointed out that the true definition of irony \u2014 when something is said or done that is the opposite of what\u2019s expected \u2014 doesn\u2019t completely apply to many of the examples in the song. <\/p>\n
