{"id":199616,"date":"2025-12-23T10:30:10","date_gmt":"2025-12-23T10:30:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/199616\/"},"modified":"2025-12-23T10:30:10","modified_gmt":"2025-12-23T10:30:10","slug":"after-bondi-attack-australian-state-to-crack-down-on-protests-terror-symbols-guns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/199616\/","title":{"rendered":"After Bondi attack, Australian state to crack down on protests, terror symbols, guns"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Australian state where Bondi Beach is located was set on Tuesday to approve sweeping laws banning terror symbols, giving authorities the power to bar protests, and cracking down on guns, after last week\u2019s deadly terror shooting there targeting a Jewish event.<\/p>\n<p>A father and son who police say affiliated with Islamic State are accused of targeting a Hanukkah event at Bondi on December 14, killing 15 people in what authorities have called an antisemitic terrorist attack. It was the deadliest attack on Diaspora Jews in decades and came after years of rising reports of antisemitism in Australia.<\/p>\n<p>Facing growing political pressure over the attack, state and federal governments in Australia have focused on laws limiting both hate speech and gun ownership.<\/p>\n<p>Now, the government of the state of New South Wales has recalled its parliament to introduce what it called the \u201ctoughest firearm reforms in the country.\u201d The new rules will cap the number of guns an individual can own to four, or 10 for exempted individuals, such as farmers.<\/p>\n<p>The legislation will also ban the display of \u201cterrorist symbols,\u201d including the flag of ISIS, which was found in a car linked to the shooters.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\tGet The Times of Israel&#8217;s Daily Edition<br \/>\n\t\t\tby email and never miss our top stories\n\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\tBy signing up, you agree to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/terms\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">terms<\/a><\/p>\n<p>And it will give authorities power to prohibit protests for up to three months following a terrorist incident. Days ago, the BBC reported that New South Wales was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/australian-state-to-ban-globalize-the-intifada-chant-in-wake-of-bondi-terror-attack\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">also looking to prohibit<\/a> the slogan \u201cGlobalize the intifada,\u201d a frequent chant at pro-Palestinian rallies seen by many Jews as a call for antisemitic violence. The UK <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/uk-makes-first-arrests-for-globalize-the-intifada-chants-in-shift-spurred-by-bondi-attack\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">banned the slogan last week<\/a> in the wake of the Bondi shooting and an attack earlier this year on a synagogue in Manchester.<\/p>\n<p>The reforms are expected to pass the upper house of the New South Wales parliament on Tuesday evening or early Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>State Premier Chris Minns said the laws will \u201ckeep the people of New South Wales safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhether that\u2019s on gun regulation in New South Wales, or secondly, changes to protest,\u201d he told reporters, the reforms will serve \u201cto lower the temperature in Sydney.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3718212\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/AFP__20251012__78GN6LP__v1__HighRes__AustraliaPalestinianIsraelConflictProtest.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1365\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tNew South Wales police officers watch pro-Palestinian demonstrators hold flags and placards as they march during a rally in Sydney on October 12, 2025. (DAVID GRAY \/ AFP)<\/p>\n<p>A broad coalition of groups has vowed a constitutional legal challenge to the anti-protest laws.<\/p>\n<p>Palestine Action Group Sydney, one of those involved in the challenge, accused the state of having \u201cpushed through legislation without due process, attacking our fundamental right to protest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It also accused the state of making \u201cunsubstantiated and plainly dishonest links between antisemitism and the Palestine solidarity movement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Australia\u2019s federal government is at the same time pushing for new laws creating an aggravated offense for hate preaching, penalties for those deemed to have sought to radicalize minors, and a new register of allegedly extremist groups it will become illegal to join.<\/p>\n<p>It will also pay gun owners to surrender \u201csurplus, newly banned and illegal firearms.\u201d It would be the largest gun buyback since 1996, when Australia cracked down on firearms in the wake of a shooting that killed 35 people at Port Arthur.<\/p>\n<p>\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3712063\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/AFP__20251215__884Y763__v4__HighRes__MassShootingAtJewishFestivalOnAustraliaSBondiBe.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1365\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tA handout photo taken and released by the Australian Prime Minister\u2019s Office on December 15, 2025, shows Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese laying flowers at the Bondi Pavilion at Bondi Beach, the scene of a deadly terror shooting targeting a Hanukkah event, 15 people were killed. (Handout \/ NSW Courts \/ AFP)<\/p>\n<p>Police documents released Monday said the two alleged gunmen, Sajid and Naveed Akram, had carried out \u201cfirearms training\u201d in what was believed to be the New South Wales countryside. Sajid, 50, was killed by police during the attack.<\/p>\n<p>His 24-year-old son Naveed was moved from the hospital to Long Bay jail in southeastern Sydney on Monday. He was charged last week with 15 counts of murder, as well as committing a terrorist act and planting a bomb with intent to harm. He has yet to enter a plea over the charges.<\/p>\n<p>Authorities alleged the pair \u201cmeticulously planned\u201d the attack \u201cfor many months.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The pair also recorded a video in October railing against \u201cZionists\u201d while sitting in front of an ISIS flag and detailing their motivations for the attack, police allege.<\/p>\n<p>And they made a nighttime reconnaissance trip to Bondi Beach just days before the killings, documents showed.<\/p>\n<p>On Sunday, thousands gathered at a memorial ceremony at Bondi Beach, celebrating the eighth night of Hanukkah and marking one week since the attack.
