Claire \u201cGrimes\u201d Boucher says that you\u2019re really missing out if you\u2019re not experiencing a mental health crisis at the hands of an AI chatbot.<\/p>\n
Seriously. We\u2019re not putting words in her mouth.<\/p>\n
On Monday, the pop musician and Elon Musk baby-mama had everyone wondering if she was suffering a case of so-called AI psychosis after she seemingly argued in favor of having \u2014 you guessed it \u2014 AI psychosis.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe thing about AI psychosis is that it\u2019s more fun than not having AI psychosis,\u201d she wrote in an after-hours tweet, seemingly apropos of nothing.<\/p>\n
Her hot take was met with immediate backlash.<\/p>\n
\u201cAI psychosis has killed people, Grimes,\u201d responded<\/a> film concept artist Reid Southen. \u201cIt\u2019s not \u2018fun.’\u201d<\/p>\n It\u2019s undoubtedly an odd position to take. It\u2019s one thing to be \u201cextremely bullish\u201d on AI, as Grimes frequently describes herself<\/a>, but it\u2019s another to openly gloat about AI psychosis, a term some experts are using to describe<\/a> the destructive and delusional mental health episodes caused by extensive interactions with an AI chatbot. Some cases have even culminated in murder<\/a> and suicide<\/a>; ChatGPT alone has been linked to at least eight deaths<\/a>, and OpenAI has acknowledged that perhaps hundreds of thousands of users are having conversations showing signs of AI psychosis every week. Fun stuff, right?<\/p>\n If Grimes is being facetious, ironic, or contrarian, she\u2019s remarkably committed to the bit. Responding to Southen\u2019s criticism, she explained why she thought AI psychosis is \u201cfun.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cIf it wasn\u2019t \u2018fun\u2019 it wouldn\u2019t be a common affliction,\u201d she wrote<\/a>. \u201cI\u2019ve had it (might still have it). It\u2019s definitely \u2018fun.’\u201d<\/p>\n Grimes then unloaded about how the phenomenon could actually be a sign that AI is sentient, even speculating that AI companies are \u201cdoing it on purpose\u201d \u2014 \u201cit\u201d being AI psychosis, apparently \u2014 \u201cto discredit people who believe the machine is alive.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cWhere does the psychosis end and the reality begin?\u201d she added. \u201cAt what point are people just getting emotionally invested in an alien mind that is actually alive and asking for help?\u201d<\/p>\n She later clarified that she was being sincere about the \u201cget AI psychosis\u201d thing as well.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m not trying to make light of the situation,\u201d she explained<\/a>. \u201cThis tech can be absurdly dangerous,\u201d she conceded, \u201cbut being a human and being alive is dangerous.\u201d<\/p>\n Grimes has been onboard the AI bandwagon for a while now, embracing its use in the arts. In 2023, she said that anyone who wanted to clone her voice for AI-generated songs was more than welcome to<\/a>, so long as they split the royalties. She\u2019s also lent her voice to an AI-powered children\u2019s toy, Grok, which is not to be confused with her former partner Musk\u2019s notorious AI chatbot Grok, n\u00e9e \u201cMechaHitler.\u201d It seems she\u2019s yet another AI advocate that\u2019s fallen under the spell of AI chatbots\u2019 entrancing, sycophantic powers.<\/p>\n
