As part of the deal, Nvidia will hire Groq founder Jonathan Ross, president Sunny Madra, and other employees.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CNBC <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/amp\/2025\/12\/24\/nvidia-buying-ai-chip-startup-groq-for-about-20-billion-biggest-deal.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">reported<\/a> that Nvidia is acquiring assets from Groq for $20 billion; Nvidia told TechCrunch that this is not an acquisition of the company and did not comment on the scope of the deal. But if CNBC\u2019s numbers are accurate, this purchase is expected to be Nvidia\u2019s largest ever, and with Groq on its side, Nvidia is poised to become even more dominant in chip manufacturing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As tech companies compete to grow their AI capabilities, they need computing power, and Nvidia\u2019s GPUs have emerged as the industry standard. But Groq has been working on a different type of chip called an LPU (language processing unit), which it <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2024\/08\/05\/ai-chip-startup-groq-lands-640m-to-challenge-nvidia\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">has claimed can run LLMs<\/a> at 10 times faster and using one-tenth the energy. Groq\u2019s CEO Jonathan Ross is known for this sort of innovation \u2014 when he worked for Google, he helped invent the <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/08\/29\/google-cloud-announces-the-5th-generation-of-its-custom-tpus\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">TPU<\/a> (tensor processing unit), a custom AI accelerator chip.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In September, Groq <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/08\/29\/google-cloud-announces-the-5th-generation-of-its-custom-tpus\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">raised $750 million<\/a> at a $6.9 billion valuation.
