Wayne Coyne has addressed Steven Drozd\u2019s departure from\u00a0The Flaming Lips<\/a>, saying that \u201cwhat he told everyone was a\u00a0lie\u201d.<\/p>\n

Last week, multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Drozd\u00a0appeared to confirm that he had parted ways with the band<\/a>\u00a0in a since-deleted post on Threads. \u201cThey\u2019re done with me \u2013 but we\u2019re not talking about it,\u201d he wrote.\u00a0\u201cSo\u00a0yes\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0moving on. Just keep it to yourself for now. OK?\u201d<\/p>\n

He has been absent from the band\u2019s shows in recent months, with AJ Slaughter stepping in to replace him, but until now, neither the band nor\u00a0frontman\u00a0Coyne had spoken publicly on the matter.<\/p>\n

That changed yesterday (December 23), when Coyne posted on his Instagram to provide an update. \u201cFor anybody who read\u00a0Stevens\u00a0post about the reason he is no longer in the Flaming Lips \u2026 I can say that is\u00a0absolutely not\u00a0true,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe reason he left is sad, and infuriating,\u201d he added. \u201cIt is HIS responsibility to tell everyone what happened\u2026 what he told everyone was a lie\u00a0\u2026.I\u00a0was trying to give him (Steven) his own space and time to let everyone know what REALLY happened.\u201d<\/p>\n

Coyne continued that he\u00a0will\u00a0\u201cpost more\u201d in a few\u00a0days\u2019 time, before thanking fans for their continued support and for \u201cgiving us the greatest life anyone could ever live\u201d.<\/p>\n

Drozd himself\u00a0sent another message on Sunday (December 21). \u201cAt the end of 2024 I started to think it would be best for me and my family if I didn\u2019t tour anymore,\u201d he said. \u201cSo, I\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0tour in\u00a02025\u00a0and it felt right. Then, it just\u00a0kinda\u00a0went from there. Wayne and I have parted ways after 33-34 years.\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0making some\u00a0new music\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0excited about and plan to have an LP out in spring or summer.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Flaming\u00a0Lips\u2019\u00a0drummer\u00a0Matthew Duckworth Kirksey also addressed Drozd\u2019s departure at the weekend<\/a>, talking up the current incarnation of the band and teasing that \u201cthere is\u00a0new music\u00a0on the\u00a0way\u00a0and I think it\u2019s the best thing we\u2019ve done in ages\u201d.<\/p>\n

Among their upcoming dates\u00a0are next year\u2019s Latitude Festival<\/a>, where they will be playing alongside the\u00a0likes of\u00a0Lewis Capaldi<\/a>,\u00a0Teddy Swims<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0David Byrne<\/a>.<\/p>\n
