Thousands took to the streets to protest the current situation, and local, regional, and national governments are trying to regulate the market and expand public housing options.<\/p>\n<p>However, 2025 will be mainly remembered for April 28&#8217;s blackout across Spain. Over 50 million people were left without electricity for many hours, with many looking for torches and candles.<\/p>\n<p>April 5<\/p>\n<p>The lack of housing options is the biggest concern for Catalans. In Barcelona, thousands <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catalannews.com\/society-science\/item\/thousands-rally-in-barcelona-against-high-housing-costs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">took to the streets<\/a> to protest against the &#8220;speculative trend&#8221; seen across the city. Residents opposed the measure and fought to continue living on site. Many people were stranded on trains and in lifts, forced to sleep in sports halls, and others started panic-buying food, torches, and candles.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>During the afternoon, the power slowly started to recover. Still, many companies had to shut down for the day, hospitals activated their emergency protocols, and while the airport was operating as normal, many passengers and cabin crew could not reach the infrastructure. Metro and Rodalies commuter <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catalannews.com\/society-science\/item\/stuck-on-a-train-to-barcelona-to-receive-cancer-treatment-during-blackout-it-was-an-odyssey\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">train services were down<\/a>. The hypothesis of a cyberterrorist attack is less plausible, as Spain&#8217;s grid operator Red El\u00e9ctrica places the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catalannews.com\/society-science\/item\/spain-grid-blackout-large-tension-18-june-2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">origin at a solar power plant<\/a> in Badajoz. Judges say MNAC has never been the owner of the paintings, only their custodian.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The museum warns that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catalannews.com\/culture\/item\/national-art-museum-mnac-future-sixena-mural-paintings-16-june-2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">moving the murals<\/a> would risk the pieces, and many art restorers urge a &#8220;technically and scientifically&#8221; decision, not one &#8220;based on political motives.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A month after the ruling, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catalannews.com\/culture\/item\/aragonese-technicians-enter-mnac-to-study-transfer-of-sixena-paintings\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Aragonese experts<\/a> traveled to Barcelona to study the murals, while the MNAC released new reports warning of the dangers of moving the pieces.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/7c5ef849-a239-4a02-a933-d041982d8b93.jpg\" alt=\"The Sixena murals on display at MNAC in Barcelona\"\/><br \/>\nThe Sixena murals on display at MNAC in Barcelona \/ Eli Don<\/p>\n<p>June 10<\/p>\n<p>The Catalan government, the Spanish transport ministry, and AENA airport managers reached a controversial agreement to expand the Josep Tarradellas Barcelona El Prat airport. The plan is to finish <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catalannews.com\/politics\/item\/barcelona-airportexpansion-announcement-june-10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">construction works in 2033<\/a>, after a \u20ac3.2 billion investment to extend the third runway, the one closest to the sea, build a satellite terminal, and refurbish the T1 and T2 terminals.<\/p>\n<p>The cabinet argues that the expansion is compatible with preserving the natural habitats along the Llobregat River and in the Ricarda Natural Park. Many environmental organizations and nearby city councils <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catalannews.com\/society-science\/item\/environmental-protest-barcelona-airport-expansion-7-july-2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">oppose the measure<\/a>, while in Parliament, the plan continues its procedure despite the opposition of left-wing Esquerra Republicana, Comuns, and CUP.<\/p>\n<p>June 26<\/p>\n<p>Spain&#8217;s Constitutional Court upheld most of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catalannews.com\/politics\/item\/spains-constitutional-court-approves-amnesty-law\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">amnesty law<\/a> for all those related to the Catalan independence push. The ruling takes place a year after being approved in Congress, and with major leaders, such as former Catalan president Carles Puigdemont, still waiting to be granted an amnesty.<\/p>\n<p>Puigdemont urges the Constitutional Court to lift the arrest warrants in Spain, which would allow him to return to Catalonia without facing time in prison. In November, the Advocate General of the European Court of Justice released a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catalannews.com\/society-science\/item\/eu-advocate-general-opinion-amnesty-law-european-legislation-terrorism-embezzlement-13-november-2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">non-binding report<\/a> in favor of the amnesty law.<\/p>\n<p>June 30<\/p>\n<p>Several corruption cases affect trusted collaborators of Spanish PM Pedro S\u00e1nchez and the Socialist Party. Gu\u00e0rdia Civil police expose several payments in exchange for granting public construction works. Santos Cerd\u00e1n, former Socialist secretary general, former transport minister Jos\u00e9 Luis \u00c1balos, and collaborator Koldo Garc\u00eda <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catalannews.com\/politics\/item\/pretrial-detention-without-bail-for-top-socialist-figure\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">enter prison<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Aside from the corruption cases, the Socialists are in the spotlight because of numerous sexual assault allegations within the left-wing party. Pedro S\u00e1nchez&#8217;s family is also under judicial investigation, as his brother, David S\u00e1nchez, was hired by the Arts Department of the provincial government of Badajoz. The judicial process against his wife, Bego\u00f1a G\u00f3mez, for her academic activity and her relationship with the financial loan to Air Europa.<\/p>\n<p>July 1<\/p>\n<p>Catalonia registered 2,168 wildfires in 2025, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catalannews.com\/society-science\/item\/wildfires-surge-62-in-catalonia-in-2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">62.6% increase<\/a> from 2024. On July 1, a blaze in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catalannews.com\/society-science\/item\/wildfires-in-western-catalonia-stay-at-home-orders-issued-for-nine-municipalities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Torrefeta i Florejacs<\/a>, in central Catalonia, burned over 5,000 hectares, most of it in rural areas. Two farmers died during the fire. Due to the flames&#8217; strength, speed, and the large fire cloud, firefighters consider it a sixth-generation fire, linked to climate change.<\/p>\n<p>A week later, on July 7, a new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catalannews.com\/society-science\/item\/photos-pauls-wildfire-july-2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">wildfire starts in Pa\u00fcls<\/a>, in southern Catalonia, affecting 2,400 hectares in nine days. Around 18,000 people are confined due to flames, while a firefighter dies after a 20-meter fall.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/44d7040b-1ee1-433e-9272-d08d4f41556c.jpeg\" alt=\"Flames burning in the Parc Natural dels Ports during the Pa\u00fcls wildfire in July\"\/><br \/>\nFlames burning in the Parc Natural dels Ports during the Pa\u00fcls wildfire in July \/ Jordi Borr\u00e0s<\/p>\n<p>October 1<\/p>\n<p>The Israeli army intercepted the Global Sumud Flotilla, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catalannews.com\/society-science\/item\/aid-flotilla-leaves-barcelona-again-for-gaza-after-weather-delay\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">left from Barcelona<\/a> in early September, with former city mayor Ada Colau and international activist Greta Thunberg, as part of the passengers.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the whole year, Catalonia sees <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catalannews.com\/society-science\/item\/protest-barcelona-israel-sumud-flotilla-gaza-palestine-october-2-2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">dozens of demonstrations<\/a> against the &#8220;genocide&#8221; in Gaza and calling for a ceasefire.<\/p>\n<p>Barcelona city council broke ties with the Israeli government led by Benjamin Netanyahu. On October 10, the first phase of the ceasefire between Gaza and Israel starts.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/3c133087-5b55-4439-8ec5-47b3005c44b0.jpg\" alt=\"A Palestine flag at a demonstration in Lleida\"\/><br \/>\nA Palestine flag at a demonstration in Lleida \/ Alba Mor<\/p>\n<p>October 13<\/p>\n<p>Torrential rain due to a DANA flood towns and fields in Montsi\u00e0, in southern Catalonia, with accumulated water of around 300 mm in Santa B\u00e0rbara. Around 1,000 people are evicted from their homes and are forced to sleep in sports halls.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Earlier in the year, on July 13, two people drowned after the Foix reservoir flooded. Because of the constant emergencies, the Catalan government <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catalannews.com\/society-science\/item\/flood-alert-sent-to-phones-in-southern-montsia-county\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">set up the ES-Alert emergency<\/a> phone system, sparking several debates. Some people said these warnings were sent too late, others said there was no need, while others said the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catalannews.com\/society-science\/item\/spain-plans-softer-emergency-alerts-after-concerns-over-loud-tones\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">volume was very high<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/a1068dc7-cd92-47a6-8d33-e900d0828831.jpeg\" alt=\"Train tracks flooded in Montsi\u00e0\"\/><br \/>\nTrain tracks flooded in Montsi\u00e0 \/ Renfe<\/p>\n<p>October 16<\/p>\n<p>The BBVA takeover bid on Catalan bank Banc Sabadell fails after only receiving the support of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catalannews.com\/business\/item\/bbva-takeover-bid-banc-sabadell-results-september-16-2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">25% of the Sabadell shareholders<\/a>. The Basque bank had asked for at least 30% of backing. The results put an end to a long process that started in May 2024.<\/p>\n<p>At the beginning of 2025, the Banc Sabadell <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catalannews.com\/business\/item\/banco-sabadell-plans-to-return-its-hq-to-catalonia-after-leaving-amid-independence-push\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">returns its headquarters to Catalonia<\/a>, after moving them to Alicante during the peak of the independence push in 2017. While the takeover bid has the support of the market and European regulators, the Spanish government imposes several conditions, such as keeping the two entities independent for three years.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Sabadell<a href=\"https:\/\/www.catalannews.com\/business\/item\/banc-sabadell-acknowledges-selling-tsb-is-independent-from-bbvas-takeover-bid\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"> sells its British subsidiary<\/a>, TSB, to Santander, and in September, BBVA improves the offer. The Catalan bank president, Josep Oliu, responded by saying that the &#8220;offer was dead from the start,&#8221; and that the &#8220;only thing missing was for shareholders to bury it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>November 7<\/p>\n<p>Catalan pop star Rosal\u00eda releases her fourth album, &#8216;Lux.&#8217; The new proposal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catalannews.com\/culture\/item\/rosalia-lux-album-review-november-7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">leaves the urban pop music behind<\/a> and transforms her career into different genres.<\/p>\n<p>The singer recorded with the Cor de Cambra choir from the Palau de la M\u00fasica concert hall and with the Escolania de Montserrat choir. In just one week, the album becomes the most listened to on Spotify. Rosal\u00eda <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catalannews.com\/culture\/item\/rosalia-announces-lux-world-tour-with-four-barcelona-dates\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">announces a tour<\/a> starting in Lyon, France, with four concerts scheduled at Barcelona&#8217;s Palau Sant Jordi, which quickly sold out.<\/p>\n<p>A few days later, on November 12, Catalan pop band Oques Grasses announces its last concerts after a 14-year career. The group will perform <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catalannews.com\/culture\/item\/oques-grasses-sell-out-four-farewell-shows-at-barcelonas-olympic-stadium\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">four concerts at the Olympic Stadium<\/a> Llu\u00eds Companys, selling 220,000 tickets in minutes, setting a record for the most tickets sold by a Catalan artist.<\/p>\n<p>November 22<\/p>\n<p>After many delays, FC Barcelona returned to Spotify Camp Nou to play its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catalannews.com\/sports\/item\/fc-barcelona-camp-nou-return-november-22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">first official game<\/a> against Athletic Bilbao with a limited capacity of 45,401. The construction works had forced the team to play at the Olympic Stadium for over 900 days.<\/p>\n<p>The return, however, is partial as the stadium is not yet ready, the third stand is still under construction, and the roof will require the team to move away for a few months.<\/p>\n<p>Bar\u00e7a held its first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catalannews.com\/society-science\/item\/barca-returns-spotify-camp-nou-training-session-7-november-2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">open training session<\/a> in early November in front of thousands of fans who felt like they were &#8220;returning home.&#8221; A few days later, former team player Leo Messi published a few photos in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catalannews.com\/sports\/item\/barca-leo-massi-back-camp-nou-return-someday-10-november-2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">middle of the field<\/a> at night with the caption reading: &#8220;Hopefully, I can be back someday.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Last season, the FC Barcelona men&#8217;s team fell <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catalannews.com\/sports\/item\/fc-barcelona-inter-milan-champions-league-semi-final-2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">short of a treble<\/a> after losing to Inter Milan in the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League on aggregate. The 95-year-old former president testifies via a video call due to his health condition.<\/p>\n<p>The investigation began as part of the confession but later shifted to a corruption trial to determine whether his children had benefited from his position of power. The prosecution is seeking nine years in prison for Pujol, and between 8 and 29 years for his seven children and the ex-wife of the eldest.<\/p>\n<p>November 28<\/p>\n<p>The farming sector faces severe health issues, leading to lower prices and layoffs across many plants. The last problem has been the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catalannews.com\/african-swine-fever\/item\/two-cases-of-african-swine-fever-detected-in-wild-boars-outside-barcelona\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">African swine fever reported<\/a> at the Collserola mountain with several dead wild boars.<\/p>\n<p>The last diagnosed case in Catalonia was in 1994, and the disease does not yet have a vaccine. The first hypothesis points to a sandwich, but then the focus shifts to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catalannews.com\/african-swine-fever\/item\/audit-finds-research-center-suspected-of-lab-leak-meets-safety-standards-for-african-swine-fever\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">IRTA-CReSA laboratory<\/a>. The adventure of a father (Sergi L\u00f3pez) looking for his daughter in the desert at the musical techno rhythm of Kangding Ray, has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catalannews.com\/culture\/item\/oliver-laxes-sirat-shortlisted-for-five-oscars\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">shortlisted for five Oscars<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The film already won the Jury Award at the Cannes Film Festival, and had secured two Golden Globes nominations for Best International Feature Film and Best Original Score.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Catalan coproduction &#8216;Los domingos,&#8217; directed by Alauda Ruiz de Az\u00faa, won <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catalannews.com\/culture\/item\/catalan-film-los-domingos-wins-golden-shell-at-san-sebastian-festival\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">San Sebasti\u00e1n&#8217;s Golden Shell<\/a>, while Barcelona-born Jos\u00e9 Luis Guerin won the Special Jury Award.
